I'm trying to archive all my CD's to WAV and also encode using EAC's LAME for transfer to DAP in the simplest possible way. I read some FAQ's on CUE sheets but I still don't get it.

What happens if I skip the "Create CUE Sheet - Multiple WAV files with gaps ... (Non-compliant)" step? Don't know if this is relevant but my DAP does not support gapless playback.

TIA for any replies.

FLAC files will play without the CUE sheet. I don't really know why it's there.

cue sheet holds the timings and track durations, kind of like an indices that it can refer to.

its mostly used for when you choose to create a flac file as an image, ie all in one flac file rather than havin git auto split as would be normal into the separate tracks, some people prefer the managability of one single file for an album, and the cue sheet can be used and read by the dap, if supported to ensure when you press next track it cues you upto the exact right point, eg. track 3 @ 7m:45s etc etc.

but as Schalldämpfer said, not needed to play normal divided tracks.
