The title essentially says it all. I am a total noob when it comes to amps, and last April while in Japan I picked up the ATH-ES7's (my first good pair of headphones). Since then I came across head fi, and starting reading about how one should use an amp with good headphones. Now when it comes to volume, I never do turn my ipod above half volume (and I dont need to) its more than loud enough. Does an amp just increase the volume or does it improve the sound quality and detail? If it does make a noticeable difference with the pair of cans I have; which would be reasonable amp for it? Obviously I would not want one that costs more than the cans ($130 CAD max). I apologize in advance if this seems like an absolutely novice question, but I honestly don't know. Thanks in advance.

Also for people who would want to know the headphones have 32 ohms impedance

I'm a very cheap head-fier who happens to own ES7s and an amp from Gary at Welcome to Electric-Avenues.com - More About The Portable Headphones Amplifier. Even though the amp is only $60 it does make a big difference with the ES7s. The sound is much crisper and tighter. I've gotten so that I don't listen to them without the amp. If I'm not going to use an amp I use either my SR60s or KSC 75s. I highly recommend an amp.

I just ordered a Leckerton Audio UHA-3 amp/DAC because it is an inexpensive way for me to find out if the DAC makes a difference out of my MacBook. The $200 mark is a big barrier for me so I try to stay as far under as possible. Gary's amp was very pleasing in that regard, and the UHA-3 pushes the envelope. It remains to be seen if I can ever justify spending more.

In sum, an amp makes a big difference with your headphones. I can only recommend one, but it fits well within your price limit. And, Gary is Canadian.

Don't get an amp if you can resist. lol
IMO, if you satisfy with what you got now, just run away from here and don't look back or you may end up spending thousand dollors.....like me.

Goodluck
