have the speakers hooked up to the outputs on the back of an Int amp when listening to headphones through the Int amp? I want to move my Int amp to another room to test a different outlet, and I was just wondering if it will do any damage to the int amp if I use the setup without any speakers hooked up to the amp, but with the cans plugged into to the headphone out??? There is no option on the Arcam A75 that completely turns off the speakers...like switching off the A or B speaker buttons on most receivers. Thanx for the help head-fiers

If your amplifier is solid state, then you can safely operate the amp without a speaker load. Tube amplifiers should always have a load connected to the output, or you risk burining out the output transformers and maybe other components too.

If you don't want to connect speakers but still want to protect the amplifier in the event that the headphones get disconnected while it is operating, you can connect some load resistors across the speaker terminals. Radio Shack sells some larger wattage resistors at 8 ohms(20 watts), 10 ohms(5 watts), and maybe other values. The actual value of the load resistor is not important, as long as the output stage of the tube amplifier sees a load similar to a loudspeaker.

, i found the right setup/combo i've been looking for in order to reduce as much black noise from my arcam a75 as possible. first, i moved the setup out to the kitchen in order to try another socket to see if it produced as much of a hiss as the sockets in my room did. it seemed everything was going perfect until, yes, something went wrong, i think???
here's what i'm doing. i use my pre amp/integrated(arcam a75) amplifier and the cosmic together in order to have some control over the bass, treble and balance. what i do is hook up the cosmic through the pre-outs on the back of the arcam a75. isn't that what the preouts are for (in the past, i had my klipsch rsw-12 powered sub hooked up to the preouts on the back of the arcam)...external sources??? and then my source (either my sony stand alone, or my sony pcdp D-350) is hooked up to the cd-input on the back of the arcam a75. i press play and turn both amplifiers on and hazza, i have great sound with no black noise, and quality control over the bass and treble...it all sounds teriffic!!! but what happens after i turn the volume knob above the 12 o'clock position on the arcam, regardless of the volume position on both the source or the cosmic, the arcam shuts off as if it is pretecting itself, and it is pretecting itself...but why??? at first, i thought it was because i had unplugged the headphones from the headphone out of the arcam a75, but when i plugged a different set of cheap cans back into the headphone-out of the arcam, it still shut off the music when turning the volume knob past the 12 o'clock position???? do i have to have speakers connecting to thge speaker outs when using the pre-outs on my arcam a75 int amplifier. this just all seems wierd to me because as i understand it, this is the type of thing the arcam was built for...hooking up other components to it so the arcam can have control of the volume and power?? i hope i can get this fixed because then i have a reason to keep my beloved arcam, which i obviously like very much

why is it putting itself into protection mode??? yet again, I thank you guys and gals in advance for any help you can offer a clueless noob such as myself
