Yep, those are the only two lossless portables. No .SHN players, but you can convert. Also most HD based ones can play uncompressed WAV/AIFFs (though you're obviously doubling the space used).
Well like FLAC (and most lossless) the ratio of compression is about the same (40-60%). Try Hydrogens lossless forum. Apple hasn't posted much info yet on it. I switched from FLAC to ALAC (because of player issues), and find them comparable. Don't know if ALAC is as forgiving in decoding a corrupted file as FLAC though.
Apple Lossless (ALAC) has compression ratios very, very close to FLAC. Because of this, some people have speculated that it may be based on similar algorithms to FLAC.
You can easily convert all your files between any of the lossless formats (there are utilities that do this), so even if most of your files are in a different lossless format you'll still be able to use either the Karma (FLAC) or the iPod (ALAC).
RIght on...again you all never fail to answer my questions.
I'm super familiar with lossless as I trade Grateful Dead shows. I've been waiting for portable to play shns and flacs for some time, I guess the ALAC is my answer. Now I'm doing th math in my head trying to figure out how many shows I can fit on a 60 G iPod. Its way too early. I'll try that later.
