Well I made one. They sound amazing. I used 3" fullrange speaker drivers, but the bass is a bit strong so maybe 2" fullrange drivers would work better. The nearfield frequency response up to 3000Hz is extremely flat. Farfield measurements confirm that the treble is flat as well.

It's a shame that K1000-type headphones have to be so ugly by their very design. Otherwise I would show pictures.

I used these little buggers for drivers (back when they were half price):

Aurasound NS3-193-8A 3" Extended Range from Madisound

I think the smaller 2" drivers would work better as a regular headphone (as opposed to open headphones):

Aurasound NSW2-326-8A-120 2" Full Range with Solder Pads from Madisound

The 3" speaker is only 80-15Khz, so you should mis a lot of bass I think, or at least the deepest baselines..

to the contrary, the bass is the best i've ever heard from "headphones". very deep and well-defined bass. these little things have 6mm of excursion. most drivers used in headphones start rolling off at around 200Hz when measured from 1m. used as headphones you get most of the low end back. hence, my recommendation of the 2" unit for regular DIY headphones (as opposed to open headphones, where the 3" would be better).

I think I'll give it a go, a DIY woody headphone with these 3" or 2" drivers should be a fun thing to toy with.

What are you using for the frame? I'm going to be putting up a pair of MB Quart QP85's for sale soon which would be ideal to hack apart I would think.
