they're doing it again. i did the spoon trick all of a week ago. has anyone found a long lasting way to fix the problem? senn won't fix them. and i hate like hell to be extorted into buying new ones. these sound just fine, when they sound.

channel cutting out, snap crackle pop. turns out to be known problems with the connector pre 1999 production.
spoon trick is described in a thread from Squirt, sometime back. one opens the cups with a spoon (no kidding), and futzes with the coil spring with a jeweler's screwdriver. helped for a couple of days.
if i'd been using the 'phones daily for the time i've had them, and abused them, and the design made sense in the first place; then expecting senn to fix their bad design might not be fair. but i've only used them sporadically, and i did send them back shortly after i bought them. all they did was put on a new cable: the connector wasn't touched. they've not admitted that they might have some responsibility for the problem. not a trustworthy company, so far as i'm concerned.
i'm guessing the metal is fatigued and lost it's elasticity. you can try shoving things (perhaps pieces of paper or such) into the adjacent coils of the spring to keep the spring pressing tight against the little metal rods.
Originally posted by kcits could it be corrosion on the connections? i've heard that using a bit of cleaning alcohol to rub off any excess stuff on the connections may fix it..
just got my New WireWorld Nova toslink (no booing, please; it's the only connection i can get from the source. ok, so that means it can't be a Great Source), and some ProGold. cleaned the pins, but no green or black sludge came off. see how it goes.

wellllllllll, they haven't seen fit to reply, except to say they'd send me a new cable. when i replied that this was a well known problem unrelated to the cable, i got no further reply.
it is just a bad design they foisted off on a lot of folks for a long time. now, making a cable socket that doesn't work isn't as bad as making tires that blow up and kill folks, but i still think they knew what they were doing and are actively avoiding responsibility. yeah, i'm a little irritated. if the phones were cheap and sounded like sony earbuds, i'd be inclined to blow it all off. but there is a lot about the design which is superior.
from looking at the drive unit, there isn't a lot that could be done to the socket to really upgrade it. the drive assembly has to be replaced with the new version. i've not seen the new version, but i'd guess that they molded in "knobs" to provide mechanical retention of the plug.
How much do they get for replacement drivers? They are easy to remove (I just had one of mine out). I couldn't tell how the hell they connected that hair thin wire to the post, but I wasn't looking that close at the time. I had the impression that the wire went through the pin and was crimped in place.
Proved that despite its huge size the CD3000 can be shoved down one's throat.
