120ohm bery comp drivers in some wood shells that I got from somewhere.
I love these shells. They really bring out a beautiful tone in these drivers.

I need some advice on driver options for a 1st/2nd time build. I listen to my gear mainly on usb dongles (ve odo & kz am01), and occasionally off of a bt dac; and I don't plan on upgrading DACs in the near future.

I will have two sets of mx500-style shells and I also have a pair of 120 beryllium drivers on the way for one of the two sets. I also plan on socketing both with mmcx too. (*I would've preferred a smaller diameter shell for my build but the price for the two sets was too good to pass up on)

For the second set, would a 150Ω beryllium (bass version) driver be too much of a side grade and too similar to the 120Ω driver? Or are there better options out there to try?

Wish I could be more help, but I'm very much an amateur. Good luck with your experiments! :)
Found Rit DyeMore for 10USD on Amazon with import discounts! Let's see how it turns out 🙂
Also bought a local pigment I found for acrylics, it'll be great if it works hehe, it's ~10x cheaper and readily available (Rit took almost a month to arrive).

If all goes well, I'll finally be done with the varnish/dye/paint purchases for a few weeks lol

That's great! I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

Wow, you hacked your LREY buds for the shells already? Absolutely nothing wrong with that, I guess the LREY's weren't good for you.

Yeah, despite damping airflow through the hole, which helped, it was not enough to make me want to use them. It's no fault of the builder, because he's obviously made a bud that is loved by many people.

It's just... after I started DIY'ing for a while, I could find ways to tune to fit my personal preferences, which nobody else can do. That knowledge beats out any hundreds of dollars that I could spend on other people's buds. Thanks to you and the others on this and the earbuds thread.

I don't think I'll be buying any more big name buds anymore. Just interesting shells, cables, and drivers. Well, unless I am able to listen to them for a while first.

By the way, the hacked version sounds amazing :D It is currently permanently attached to my Qudelix 5k.

The 120 Bery and 130 Bery are special drivers that allow anyone to create great sounding earbuds.
Just because you've created earbuds that you're satisfied with using these, I think it's a bit premature to say that you won't be buying big name buds in the future. :dt880smile:

There's nothing like building your own set of custom tuned buds. There's always a few flops, but when you come across the right combo of shell, driver, cable and tuning it's very satifiying.

Well you could be right :P It wouldn't be the first time I've backtracked.

Still, I mean it at this point in time. Every so often I go back and try some of the $100+ buds I have, and they just don't sound as good as the ones I made for me. It's hard to justify spending big money on something that isn't likely to be as good sounding to my ears.

Im struggling to find earbuds that can fit into my small ears and i was wondering if anyone knew how the Fengru DIY PK1 sounds compared to the yuin models? Does it sound close? I really like the comfort of the PK shell but most of the shells out there are much larger or not as comfortable (mx500, bell, etc).
