I am using singlepower mpx3 amp with 701's and dh5000 and high quality cd player as source (analog input to amp no DAC) and get considerable sound distortion at higher volumes - minimal at lower volumes. What is the most likely reason or am I simply listening too loud? Would a DAC help? It is a high quality cd player ($1000 several years ago) so presumably has a relatively decent built in DAC.

Is it the same magnitude on both headphones ?

Is it the same magnitude (as far as you can tell) on all recordings ?

What music do you listen to , massed voices for isnatnce often sound distorted

Just how loud are you playing it - all headphones have a maximum input power and your amp will exceed that for the 701s

At lower levels (with the above provisos) distortion and noise should not be
audible, if you are *routinely* getting distortion something is wrong especially if it is the same on both headphones (notwithstanding overdriving them) . To discover where the blame lies you need to swap things out one at a time.

You need to borrow (a) a different CD player and (b) a different amp and (c) some really good quality recordings to rule out your music choices - sorry but it has to be asked.

Good luck
