I've noticed that I get distortion above volume 6 (when using any kind of headphones). Does
this have to do with battery type (2 Ni-MH AAs - 1600 mAh each) in unit or
is it that none of my headphones can handle above a certain power
threshold (Sony MDR-CD180s and MDR-V250s) within the maximum output wattage (total 200 mW RMS)?

What kind of headphones was this amp made for and what scource? I'm
using it in an iRiver H140 hard drive DAP on the line-out
(volume-adjustable, set to maximum).

Thanks...

1600mAh is very low for AA's these days. I have some 2700mAh that I bought a year ago, and you might even be able to get higher. I don't know the amp well, but try it with the wall wart and see if that makes any difference. If so, then you need higher cap batteries.

OK. It still distorts past volume 6.

If you've tried other batteries in case they're not working properly, it may be an idea to check the battery contacts. Mine became a bit messy looking and I had to scrape them.

Also playing around with the volume of the input? The Iriver has quite a healthy output. The volume control is linked to the Line Out.

If it still distorts when you turn the PA up and it's not the power from the batteries, then it's the unit - other than headphones. If you've tried different headphones, then at least that's ruled out.

I suspect the Iriver is up a tad high ....
