I have been saving up in coins for what ever i wanted for a while now, with the original plan of it being for a car.

However

Since then I've discovered the wonders of photography, and I've now discovered the wonders of photography, and I desperately want a nikon d50. So the plan changed slightly, the camera now being top of the list. Now I've finally got enough money, I've come to realise that 400 pounds is really quite a lot of money, and could in fact buy me a car instead of a camera.

So I've reached a dilemma, do I buy the camera or do I put the money towards a car which I'll be buying in 8 months?

Does this money also have to go toward the insurance, mots, road tax, petrol and other car expenses? Those will add up to a lot more than some rolls of film and a new lens cap. If you need the money, then keepin it for the car seems to be the more sensible option.

Do you desperately need a car?

I think a little backtrack is okay if you don't need the car so urgently.

Car is way more expensive anyway, so the cost of D50 won't make so much difference towards the saving for the car, no?

But if it's between a D50 or a car with a price like D50, I'd get a D50 thanks.

I'd choose the camera as well, but for different reasons.

A car, in my opinion, serves one purpose. To get you from point A to point B. I could care less about options (but they are nice to have). So to me, the cheaper you can get a car the better because as long as it serves it's purpose who cares how it looks in the process. Also, as soon as you buy the car it's value will decrease generally by 15 or more percent. Given enough time it will eventually have problems, cost you money to keep it going, and be a headache in general.

However, a car might be very necessary but if it's your first I say don't worry about options and just get you something to get you by until you find an enjoyable career that will provide you enough stability to own a nice car.

So go for the camera. If you love taking pictures and it's something that you really care about it, then the having the camera will pay off tremendously in the end.

I mean, would you rather have a nice gadget that sits outside and looks nice that people can "oooh" and "ah" over, or would you rather have a nice gadget that makes you happy and provides a good hobby for yourself? The choice is yours.

I scrimp on the car. Splurge on the toys.

Had to buy a new car for the wife to primarily drive since hers died.

But I still drive my 13 year old Mazda MX-3. It's old, but it still works, so why replace it?

Much rather spend the money on headphone gear.

My parents payed 1k towards the car and half the insurance for my brother, so I presume this is what I'll be getting, so I'll try and keep to actual price down to 1k. I'm planning on getting a job asap and keep it through to when I get a car so I can save up a bit and still have petrol money afterwards.

I think what's bothering me is the amount of money, 400 pounds will be the most I've ever spent on ANYTHING, I've been thinking about this camera for a while, and now the time has finally come I'm a bit unsure. Oh and the fact that that I'd have the break the news to my parents that I've splashed my car fund on a camera lol.
