I( wonder if the digital out from a cheap dvd player is as good as anything else as it should avoid any issues with the other audio and video circuitry and be just the same as digital out from a cd transport or cd player (listening carefully should hear no difference)

Is this true?

I would not have an issue with using the S/PDIF coaxial output on a low cost DVD player.

The only thing of concern is DVD Players send 24/96 and some older AVR's and Pre-Pros have coax which is limited to 16/48.
