Digital cables

Thanks. I know zilch about digital cables, and have no idea what types are compatible with my transport (Rega Planet 2000) or the prospective DACs (Audio Note 1.1x, 47 Labs Shigaraki).

What is Toslink, Coax, and SP/DIF? Coax uses RCA jacks right?

A basic DIY cable made of Belden 1695A works just fine.

Toslink is a type of optical connector.
Coax means the cable uses standard coaxial wire to transmit signals.
S/PDIF information.

if you decide on the spdif/coax cable ,don't buy one , build it man !
You can make a way better cable than you can purchase at any rational price .

Radio Shack/Beldon cable
Canare 75 ohm plugs
heat shrink
Teflex cover in any color you like !

You need to do this (subliminal...you need to do this ...this...this)

Also there's a review of digital cables on sixmoons

Ha Ha
I got mine before Xmas but haven't had time to play with it yet. The 6 moons review is very informative since I have the Bel Canto Dac II and the AZ Mc2 which the author used to compare. Notice he did not say Supernova was superior only hard to tell apart which is very good compliment for $100 cable to match $300 cable which was very highly regarded by everyone.

BTW Calantacus, where is review on that AudioMagic Stealth.........I must know more.

Belden 89259 or 1506A. I bought a stealth fineline MK2 and it didn't hold up to either of these DIY's. Jon Risch design. You can call belden and have them send you samples of both (just cable)...FOR FREE! Can't beat the price, but that doesn't matter. The sound is worth it. 1506A is the better of the 2.

I use Apogee wyde-eye cable. It's a "pro audio" cable, not an "audiophile" cable. I haven't compared it with any other cables. I bought it because of the Stereophile recommendation, and it's also very cheap!

You might as well get the Wireworld Supernova III glass toslink cable. (new glass toslink much better vs old plastic fiber)

After a couple days break-in on system II, I connected this to my Bel Canto DAC II as author did in 6 moons review, I was using the very highly regarded AZ Mc2. I have slightly different findings, in my system Mc2 has slightly more treble energy and SN III was slightly darker sounding a bit more relaxed. Which is better will depend on your other gear, but other than the slight tonal difference the SN III seems about equal to Mc2 in other respects. I could live happily with SN III.

Advantages are SN III costs 1/3 the price, and is lighter, thinner, more flexible which can be useful for cable management. I think many are wondering why they spent hundreds on digital cables now, heh heh

BTW, for the price I think you will be very hard pressed to beat the Bel Canto Dac II, especially if you find used one at Audiogon.
I'm sure you've seen the reviews and the comparisons.
