I originally had the blue marshmallows, but my dog decided to eat them so now I have a black pair. I loved my blue ones but the black ones don't seem to have the "fun" factor of my original blue ones. The tips are different too. the black ones are much softer than the blue ones (yes I did try switching the tips and that didn't help).

Has jvc changed drivers in the last 2 months?

or did I just get a bad one the second time (there are no obvious build problems)?

Or am I going (more) insane?

This is the first time I've heard this. I'd be inclined to say it's just placebo, but you said that the tips were definitely different. This leads me to think that JVC may have indeed switched drivers.

i had a pair of blue marshmallows fr awhile now, and recently bought a green pair for my gf. the tips were different too! they were a bit smaller and more "squishy" even though they were new

i hear the green ones sound like melon... XD

anyways, remember that the marshmellow is a low end headphone which sells for $10-$20, so the manufacturing process and quality control hasnt had much research and money invested in, so median variantion of quality should be wider,

My newer (black) ones are very "squishy"

The most noticeable difference in the sound is that the bass is all but gone. Nothing sounds blown or anything the bass is just not as prominent as it was in the older ones.

I highly doubt it--if this were true only the green would sound different. The black/blue/pink/white versions were the four originals.

My bet is they've all changed.

If they look the same, then I don't think they've changed anything.

Possibly a defective pair??

The only FX33s i owned were both purchased at the same time a year or 2 ago (whenever that FOTM was) and they sounded identical. I have not heard a current pair.
