Differences between open and close
Jan 28, 2010 at 5:11 PM Post #2 of 8
Open headphones tend to give a wider soundstage so it is more likely the sound will appear to come from the headphones or even around you, rather than just in your head.

Open headphones leak more sound than closed, so are more likelt to annoy others around you. They also let more sound in, so are not good in a noisy environment, but you will be more aware of the phone ringing, or someone trying to speak to you.

Whether gaming or for music, open vs closed is more to do with the above than which is better.

Traditionally open headphones sound better. This remains true, but less so over the years. If you're going to be in a room with lots of other people I'd suggest sealed headphones. Beyer DT231 on the cheap side, Shure 440 and Sony MDR-V6 midprice, and Denon D2000 on the more pricey side.

Haven't heard any good sounding USB gaming cans with mikes, but there are more and more these days, maybe some of the folks here know of some.

Can´t generalize like that... Better take headphone for headphone really rather then trying to divide them with good/bad open/closed. It all depends how they are designed in the end.

If you are gaming? Not even the PS 3 or Xbox 360 is silent though open once is at least passable on those systems regarding noise issue

I use microsoft LX-3000 head set for gaming and they sound great for a usb head set. I use them for ventrilo/teamspeak mostly, but when wearing them randomly i started listening to music and i was pleasantly surprized.
