Hi...

Just curious - on my trawls through the internet, I came across a strange picture of a D-Z555 which has got me wondering if there are (subtle) differences between the two different models...

As you can see there, the D-Z555 shows up as having a green LED back-light - is this a trick of the light on the image, or is this a fact, that the two different models have different colored lights?

Thanks

hi duncan.

i don't think there is a difference between the two, except Zoro got his way on the D-Z555.

Interesting..

I didn't realise that you could run the 555 without the backlight - unless its running on batteries maybe (you can see the Graphic EQ is running)??

Thanks for the clarification guys

IIRC, the D-555's LCD screen is not lit when running on batteries. however, i can't remember if the backlight is lit for a few seconds if a button is pressed. there is no way i can find out with my D-555 since i don't have a working BP-2EX anymore. and yeah, the levels monitor still runs when the player is using the batteries.

With many discmans from that era (not only Sony but also Panasonic, Kenwood, Technics, recalling from personal experience) the LCD would only backlit when you stick in the AC Adaptor... if they're running on batteries the backlit would not come on even if you press some buttons...

The "Z" model is the Japanese domestic model, but usually the difference between the Japanese and International models are that Japanese ones have DBB (Dynamic Bass Boost) which is slightly heavier and deeper sonically than the International ones with Mega Bass... But I think the 555 never came with bass boost but sound presets?

That green look on an unactivated-backlit LCD can be reproduced if you have a stong external light source shinning right on top of it... well at least I see this whenever I use my Psion 5mx PDA under sunlight with the backlit off...

Duncan,

My 555 is a Z555. It does have dynamic bass boost, and it doesn't have green back-lit lcds, just the plain orange ones, which do not light on a BP2EX, only off a DC supply.
