Difference between Sonys models?????????

S61x - older budget model released last year I believe, has FM radio (max 8GB)

E43x - new budget model has WMV Playforsure support (max 8GB)

S63x - new model also has WMV Playforsure support. SQ is apparently the best (max 16GB)

S73x - like S63x but with support for noise cancelling headphones. Brushed metal finish. (max 16GB)

A81x - former flagship model, great SQ but no FM (max 8GB). Not to be confused with A80x series which is tied to SonicStage.

A72x - flagship model, SQ is apparently slightly lower than older A81x series (max 16GB)

A82x - like A72x series but with Bluetooth A2DP support (max 16GB)

All share the same UI and WM-Port connector, with slightly different menus depending on features.

this isn't to say its neccisarily worse, I know with my 829, there are older 8-- series players said to be comparable or better in SQ, even if they aren't from the current generation
(i.e 828)

828 and 829 are the same generation in different capacities.

And since the S639 is largely considered the best-sounding Sony DAP yet, intuition would tell me that the S610 is worse.

I've just bought A828. Does that mean I'm stupid and should've taken the S638? :frowning2:

Not really. The S63x series has been said to have better SQ, but the A82x has some other features that is missing from the S63x namely Bluetooth A2DP. It also has a slightly nicer design IMO, and larger screen.

But if SQ is very very important, then return the A828 and get the S638 instead.

Well, for ultra SQ I've got a stationary hi-fi rig with Sennheiser HD-600 playing Lossless.

And yes, I really like the design of A828 more... it mates very-very well with my Vaio SZ.

S63x is pretty as well, but reminds me too much of Sony-Ericsson mobile phones, which isn't that bad, but...

Frankly I don't think A828 is that much worse "SQ wise" than S638. I hardly believe it - it's mostly subjective impression, IMHO, or maybe kind of placebo effect. Anyway, I really wouldn't expect ultra quality from ANY portable rig playing MP3 anyway....

That's the part I am most curious about. I have A818 and it has been suggested that S638/S639 may have a better SQ. I don't care about FM, but I was thinking about getting S639. Has anyone actually compared these two (A818 vs S639) directly?

Yes I have compared the a818 to the s738 which is identical to the s639 except is has noise canceling headphones. The new S series are better sounding to my ears, the highs are smoother and the sound is fuller. Plus less hiss on my e530 and better detail, sounds like a whole new chipset to me and I really like it . Not that the a818 was mediocre by any means, I just like the sound sig of this one better.

Sounds like someone's trying to justify their purchase :p
