I currently am using a rockboxed 5G ipod playing only EAC ripped CD's through KSC75s primarily at gym 6 days a week. My primary content is Trance/Electronic at the gym but have a few operas, pop and classical CD's loaded for long plane trips. The equalization presets in rockbox ain't half bad.
I recently ordered a Headstage amp on fleabay and the appropriate docking cable to give that a whirl. After bidding I find there's some hassle going on about who's design it is but I don't know more than that. The design was not faulted. It's not here yet though. For the past few years I used Rio Karmas and definitly prefer the output from my CF card modded one to even the rockboxed Ipods from the headphone jack.
Before the Karmas I used MD. Normal MP3s simply don't work for me. I have a rockboxed H120 but haven't used it much. If portable headphone amps seem to give me a big sold improvement I may play with that a bit more once I have one that accepts SPDIF.
I have several setups with Squeezeboxes playing only Flac or Wav to listen to my weird mix of 2400 or so CD rips. I'm picky in general and have primarily NHT systems with the biggest Home Theatre system headed by AC3's. I am again, picky but have yet to buy any speaker cables bigger than 14ga and mostly from the hardware store. Having been a Hi-Fi dealer in the 80's, I'm nearly obsessive about quality but seldom spend money on tweaks that can only be measured by some subjective term. OK, I did replace the opamps in the Flagship Pioneer Elite 59txi I have. That was a measurable improvement by equipment tho I don't think I can hear it
I admit it...I love the rockbox interface on my 5G ipods, the 80gb capacity, and the size, but the headphone output really sucks on some material. It's not CLEAN on much of anything unfortunatly
.
I am interested in how much of an improvement I might expect from the normal docking connecter with most headphone amps vs spending $350 + for an Imod? I see that $350 going up in smoke within a year or two as other DAPs come out or someone snatches mine.
Subjective opinions are welcome
Charts and graphs even better
Thanks for the help!
