What are the major differences in SQ between dt880 and dt990? I currently have the HD650 and K701, and I'm looking to try something new (no grados for me =[, dont like em)

I thought the 880 was neutral and balanced (great for analytical listening).

The 990 is more colored and bassy (great for rocking out).

The 880 had sparkling highs. The mids were clear and forward. The bass was lean in quantity, but reached deep.

The 990 have high highs (some think shrill, and the can's biggest weakness). The mids are slightly recessed. The bass is big and booming (but I guess less so than the 770).

Sound stage is about equal, with a slight advantage to the 880.

What convinced me to sell the 880 and buy 990 was that the 880 was very unforgiving of the music -- if it was recorded or mixed badly, you heard (or didn't hear) every lean bass line and glitch. This was the case for half of my music.

The 990 just gave me toe-tapping fun and a good listening experience.

I know the person who bought my 880s has really brought out the best in them with replacement pleather ear pads and better source and amp.

I have k701, hd650, 2005 dt990(600 ohm)

dt990 is most balanced sound and best imaging headphone.
k701 lack bass quantity
hd650 lack high frequnce and muddy bass.

dt990 250ohm has recessed mid and sibilance but 600ohm has good mid and no sibilance.

DT880's balance and accuracy, as well as tight clean bass that reaches low, allows you to to bring out some amazing overall sound quality with great bass by adding a bit of EQ at the low end. It's semi open design is a plus as well. But you really need an amp to bring out the best in them.

I would say the DT990 would be more your speed.

I have both now, the DT880 and DT990 (both 05) and I do like them both, but I prefer the 990. I prefer it's overall presentation - More bass power and definition. The DT880's are lighter in overall presentation, and while I found that using pleather earpads adds back quite a bit of bass, I still prefer the DT990 overall.
