This was asked a few weeks ago, but oh well.

The differences are:

1.) brighter screen (60%)
2.) different encryption (took the rockbox and ipodlinux teams longer to crack it)

That's about it.

5.5G are available in 30GB and 80GB capesity. But 5G are only available in 30GB and 60Gb capesity. Also 5.5G screen is brighter and it has search funtion.

I know the ibuds changed at one point, they are certainly the new design on the 5.5 as I own one, but not sure about the ones that come with the 5. Probably not a big problem either way for people on this forum

I can actually stand the new iBuds. They sound very good for what they are, but I still would never pay $30 for an extra one.

The new Ibuds are really not that bad...dare I say it. I mean sure they are nothing to write home about and you are exactly right...DEFINITELY not worth the replacement...but for buds they have upgraded the comfort IMMENSELY, and they are livable for dire emergencies... I find for cheap buds, the AKG K14p makes a great alternative and spare

yeah, bad bad apple people, because they maliciously decided to replace the 60GB hd with a 80GB one, they also had to the change the block size of the HD from 512 to 1024 bytes, because elsewise they would've created an integer overflow. so of course ipodlinux and rockbox, both designed for 512 byte blocksizes, didn't run anymore.

edit: I agree, the iBuds are acceptable for low-level background listening. just don't try to turn them up and don't listen your favourite audiophile record with them

I think the difference comes from the new firmware, not from hardware. If you update your gen 5 to the new firmware it should improve the battery life.

Yes. Some people have reported problems with it (small outstanding gaps, or at the other end of the scale cutting off part of the music), but it works fine for me. And my collection's 90% classical, so I use it a lot.

2 or 3 times, I've had a tiny gap on my 5.5G. When it happened, I was never somewhere where I could investigate it. I suspect some album is not tagged as gapless. The gaps while listening to operas on my 4G would drive me crazy.
