I remember reading this thread in HeadWize (which was pointed to from some thread here) about how Shure walked away with some of Etymotic's research results after a short collaboration and then started producing 'half-assed rip-offs' of the etys. They seem to be making better products now, at least HeadRoom think so

But did Shure really rip off Etymotics this way or am I thinking of another company?

i remember the same post at Headwize but i have no idea about its accuracy. Seems to me if they really "stole" technology or techniques from Ety then they would be liable, right? However I saw in another post tonight from an Ety rep that there is no legal battle between them

IIRC Don Wilson himself posted in that thread...

The Shure products are manufactured by Westone. Shure came in to us to make headphones for their wireless product. After they sucked up some of our knowledge, they stabbed us in the back and ended up with the E1 and eventually E5. They actuall had the balls to ask us to make the eartips and filter removal tool for them. If our second patent gets issued we will be talking with them.

Should we put up a petition to HeadRoom to ask them to stop plugging the Shures then?

i am defending Shure but I would like to hear thier version of this story. So far its been all 1-sided. perhaps Shure doesn't care to comment or is afraid to make themselves liable. we should at least invite a rep from thier camp to post here

I sent an email to Shure.

Hi all,

Apparently my email hasn't reached their PR guy, but he has been browsing Head-Fi and saw this thread anyway. He sent me a pm too. Just to let you guys know that Shure is here and listening--he says he'll make an official response after a few more days of investigation.

WOW, how cool to know that certain manufacturers of headphone products are hanging around here. I guess it makes sense since the majority of their customers are here on an average week. Maybe they'll listen to some recomendations and improve their products due to what is said here???

Great job with the thread and follow-up email to Shure Joe. Make sure to let us knwo what you hear.

...and once again, I am proved wrong that the internet is JUST for online gambling, pornography, comet cursor, and BonziBuddy!

I wish some Audio-Technica guys would get on here so we could ask the simple question concerning their phones not being sold in the US.

And not to mention asking them why they chose to go with a single cable into one earpiece vice splitting the cable and running a ground serparately to each ear piece. That's what I'd like to know. Why did they do that?

the same reason why anyone uses a one-sided cable? it's more convenient and comfortable for the wearer.

Moo'ster,

Yeah I know, but at the price point of these cans, it would be nice to have the design that makes for better sound than looks and comfort. Even Senn's 580 and 600 have the split cable, and I loved it. Many were hesitant to buy the new W/A 1000 cans from AT merely due to the fact that they had a single cable with one ground shared between drivers. Bad PR at the least.

what the heck..? I would prefer one cable on all my phones. i havn't heard that it somehow affects the sound. the main complaint i have with my DT931s is the stupid split cable. The implementatain on my DT770s is single-line and much easier to deal with.

regarding the other thing, i think the Japenese just want to keep some of the cool stuff for themselves (Sony D66, the whole AT line).... i guess they are still mad about that crappy Godzilla remake a few years ago
