Hello,

I just got my schiit stack (magni and modi 2 uber) to go with my AKG K702's and I followed the instructions using RCA to connect the magni and modi and a usb 2 cable to connect my computer and modi and then obviously plugged the power in and turned them on. I am using "hi" gain, and have selected "USB Modi device" in Windows as my default device, but Windows recognizes it as speakers, is that normal? And should I use hi or lo gain.

Thanks

Edit: Another question, in Windows under speaker properties, it is set to "16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)" should I set this higher? Wondering if I need to change that with a higher end setup.

I'm using a 5k iMac with Schiit Modi 2 and Schiit Sys going to Audioengine A5+.

I can tell you that my iMac recognises the DAC as "Speaker-Schist USB Audio Device." So it's normal. Why, I don't know, but normal.

One issue I had strangely - I was watching YouTube videos while waiting for my iTunes library to copy over. And suddenly the sound cut off mid sentence. As the computer, Schiit components, powered speakers and all cables are brand new, I started getting worried I had something bad in the chain. I checked System Pref, Sound and the DAC was still discovered and selected as output. But when I looked in the Audio Midi Set-up, as you mentioned, the DAC was listed as 2-Channel, 16-bit / 44100 HZ. But the Built-In Mic and Built-In Output was listed as 2-Channel, 24-bit Integer / 44100 HZ. When I switched the DAC settings to match the rest - 24-bit / 44100 HZ - I never had the issue again with any audio.

So I can only say if you have any sound cutting out, switch that setting and you should be good to go.

It's a relatively simple device they could have programmed it to come up as anything really but speakers by convention makes sense. The dac doesn't have to be plugged into an amp that powers headphones. It could be running a 2channel setup.

Unless you have music that is receded at a higher bit rate keep everything to 16/44.

Yes "Speakers" is the default DAC name that shows up in Windows. You can change it in Properties if you desire. It should be set to 100% output. I would select settings that match your DAC. In your case:

Modi 2 Uber: 16/44.1 to 24/192 via USB. 16/44.1 to 24/192 via Toslink* and Coax.

I would second the fact that the DAC will show up as "speakers."  I just wanted to mention that you don't need to turn your PC up to 100% and I have had some distortion issues depending on the DAC.  You should be fine at ~80% but you can play around with it a bit.
