I wish could replace my northbridge, but alas I can't, as the geniuses at DFI placed it right in line with the the X16 PCI express graphics slot. So my video card sit's right above the fan, if you don't seat the card just right it hits the fan.

Try the thermalright HR-05 sli cooler, you may have room.

Haven't seen that one, funny in the installation diagram there using the same mobo (DFI Ultra D) Maybe I'll look into that, but still looks tight.

I have the non SLI version of the board, but there are these hug block jumpers. I tried to move the card when I first built this box, but the performance wasn't as good. I'll have to look at the manual again...

heh.

i wish thats all i could say. but that would be a total waste of a post.

and grats on going for nvidias SILLY mode. you got like what... 20% performance increase, bet you dont even have a monitor to support resolutions for it to even matter. and look what you got, a whole lot of noise. silly boy!

ive been bluilding completely fanless systems for years now. the idea is that heat rises, even if there isnt much of it. also, aluminum cases are amazing for cooling things such as hard disks. (thermal paste the sides, also kills vibration noise)

your athlon will run cool enough as it is. if you applied the thermal paste right( you can visit the softhardware.netforums, they have a noob-proof tutorial for correctly applying thermal paste.) you shouldnt really need a fan on a decent heatsink when running stock speeds, but maybe a larger size standing heatsink, they tend to work rather well in silent setups.

maybe one large fan in the top if you think airflow needs some assistance without upgrading cases.

as for the videocards, thats your fault, sell them then invest the sale of those 2 cards into getting a quieter videocard with a wide memory bus and high memory clocks, frame buffering benefits mostly from this (means steady framerate, wont get the jitters of silly mode trying to sync rendering, EVEN THOUGH, silly mode has a higher average of frames per second).

he's not too far from being right. I run a
X2 4800 (Zalman 7000Cu)
2GB DDR400
7900GS (Zalman VF900)

I also have 4 hard drives. except for one older drive which sounds louder my system is quiet. I tossed all this into a P180

First thing I'd do is sell a 7800GT. Use that money to buy a nice case like the P180, then replace all the fans in it with nicer quieter ones, and get a fan controller. the P180 has rubber on the side panels and hard drive mounts.

Second. Put the thing on the floor. Sure it collects more dust but pc's vibrate and if its on carpet it tends to dampen that.

Your system is not that beefy. Check out some of the systems on the Silent PC Review forums.

If you get the right case and a good CPU cooler like the Sythe Ninja, cooling your system quietly should not be a problem. The only real issue is the two graphics cards. There are plenty of suitable coolers out there, the hard part is making two of them fit.

More detailed system stats:
Case: Silverstone TJ-06 w/ window
CPU Fan: Zalman 9500 CU LED
Fan controller: ? run on minimum voltage before fans cut out.

If you can hear your HDD suspend it somehow, I have mine lifted up on the base of my case by a roll of foam sheets.

I am going to find about re-mounting my HDD's but my CPU fan is better than than..i think... Zalman 9500 (huge round one 92mm, first one), and for the fans...I have to find them...and I agree with the 7800gt fan replacement...Your probally the one I agree the most with.

Cant buy rubber mountings...case doesnt let me

Alright...My system is beefy...I know there are lots of systems out there and Ive build a few being only till 2 months ago a technician at Canada Computers (local computer store). My system is easily classified as being beefy even if yous state there are better ones...and wouldnt adding more coolers make it noiser?...and stated above...the CPU cooler thingy...I have a zalman 9500...not looking to swap...

LOL....Have you used 2x 7800gts with newer firmwares?...it works fine...beats my friends crossfire system...and clearly you are hating the nvidea...so im not going to waste my time taking advice on those GPU suggestions because we have a difference of opinions.

As for the thermal paste...I know how to apply it...so dont worry about that...I also dont use cheap crap for it either...and I also lapped my heatsink...so again....dont worry about how i apply my product...I am A+ certified with 5yrs personal experience and 1yr corperate experience in system building.

-------------

hopefully I only offended a few people...lol...jk

So...Its hopefully going to work out like this:

1) explore my existing case for mounting alternatives
2) Purchase alternate fans (case fans, and GPU, PSU is still under warrenty, and CPU is top of the line zalman minus a generation that supports am2)
3) Seek some sound deadening material from somewhere.
4) If all else fails...throw PC out of window and buy a new one...

Not a bad choice. It'll sure feel good, especially if you are on the second story! You'll also have the peace of silence you've been looking for.

Oh, and after that if you still hear the PSU and dont wanna screw your warranty. Sell it and buy a Seasonic S12, Whisper silent

K...I spent 6 hrs...recabling...my last post to 2hrs ago..

I figured out the main culprit...the gpu...

I removed it....blew it out...flushed with rubbing alchohol (hs only)
then I removed the ****** ass thermal tape...lol..yes..they use thermal tape...

and applied more artic silver 5...also the HS...only had one properly lapped contact...so I redid the other ones half ass... only about half of what I did for my CPU...runs alot colder now..which is nice...But that doesnt solve the sound issue...

So once I have time im going to track down a GPU cooler...a 3rd party one...

Looking at a few... Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 (passive) (need comments), Zalman VF 700 or VF 900....not sure...

Want an all copper one...but they charge alot more for it...going to see what I can track down...I want to see how the heat sinks go on for the memory things...I think that is what they are there are like 3 or 4 sets of 2 on each gpu...

***Artic Cooling Accelero S1, can be modded to hold a 120mm fan...using a rubber silencer, and a scythe CPU fan clip...pretty sweet eh?...Thats got to be my best choice...$30 for the HS, $2.99 for the clip, .99 for the rubber thingy...and 0 for a fan...that I can upgrade later...pretty sweet...

Beefy in terms of cooling requirements? Not that much really. The 7900s are a bit warm but the CPU is fairly low power compared to some of the 100W+ monsters out there.

Adding more fans does not always make a system louder.

Sound works like this: You tend the hear the loudest component. So, one good way to work is to figure out what part of your system is loudest, and do something about it.

Also, sound does not "add up", so two fans are not twice as loud as one fan. The trick with low noise systems is to get unrestricted airflow with big, low speed fans. My current system has 3 120mm Yate Loons and 2 92mm Panaflos, yet is inaudiable from >1m. Well, maybe you can softly hear the two 500GB hard drive seeking, but you have to concentrate. The central heating is louder.

Your case is a problem. I suggest buying an Antec, preferably a NSK6000 or maybe one of the 3000 series. For your graphics cards, get a couple of these and one or two 92mm Panaflo or Papst low noise fans: http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/m...oduct_hr03.htm

ya...that is exactly the same as the passive cooler i suggested my self...and adding a fan to it...the GPU is the loudest component...all the others are fine...so Im going to get that replaced..the CPU HS fan that is...next week..and Ill get back to you...also...I think there is a slight difference when i installed the tunnel...even though it says there is no difference...

so.....the mods will be as follows by the end of the month.

1) new HS for GPU
2) replace all fans with quieter ones...ie yate loons...or panflos...which ever i find first and cheapest..
3) alternate mountings for HD and sound dampening material.

*...i wont get a new case...this one its really heavy...and to me is nearly ideal...if I were to get a new case though...it would be a Lian-Li

My PC is similar except for the two video cards and I expect that is where a majority of the sound is coming from. One trick I learned recently to really cut down fan noise is to cut out the blow hole. This gets rid of turbulence and gives better airflow too.

Put your pc on the floor. Further away from ur ears = quieter. Thats a simple solution, or if that doesn't work well enough, grab a decent fan controller (xoxide.com has some for as little as $15) and turn down your fans.

Watercooling is good, but then you'll still have a fan on your radiator and a pump making noise.
