I know this question showed up at a few other boards but I thought it would be nice to post it here as well.
I'm thinking about

D: Miles Davis, Dylan, Nick Drake

or

W: Tom Waits, Weather Report, Wilco

or

M: Marley, Metheny, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine

Argh!!

Definitely B -- Beethoven, Brahms, and Bartok -- all three have my favorite chamber music (excluding only Mozart). Then there's Alban Berg for his crazy atonal stuff to make sure I go crazy by the time I'm rescued. And, of course, the Beatles! I think Count Basie would count too, right?

I would take the "F" letter of the "F" word ...

Since Fates Warning hasn't been heard on time and there's Faith No More for the near future All's left to hope is Frank Zappa will help me with some linguistic acrobatics and arrange for some Filth in the Cradle some Floyd with Pinkish hue and some Fled Zeppelin, Flack Sabbath, Fly Dying Bride and so on...

Now, if you put me with the back to the wall - "B" could be a viable alternative:very good for classic, quite bad for metal-ex. Sabb, so and so for rock
Beethoven
Bach
Brahms
Bruch
Britten
Bartok
Berlioz
Black Sabbath

Beatles (it's free, so why not...)
Biohazard
Bon Jovy(man, I'm in big s**t with metal...)
David Bowie
Jeff Beck
Bad Company

"T" could be a possible letter:very little choice on clasic, OK on metal so and so for rock:
Tchaikovsky (great on the classic side)
Tristania
Tool
Theater of Tragedy
Therion
Tyamat
Twisted Sister(well, it comes for free, so why not...)
The Who
Thin Lizzy
The Clash

wab, this was a very cruel question...I'm not going to forgive you so easily for that...
