Hi people, right now i'm looking at some headphones that considered good by people in this forum : Denon D2000, ATH-AD900, ATH-A900 or maybe ATH-ESW9..

As for Denons, i'm quite leaning towards it because it looks good and many people here reccomends it. But some people says it needs to be modded because the bass is too bloated and not controlled, which makes me step back from buying it.. is it true? because i'm not that DIY kind of persons, and i prefer not to void the warranty (yet).

For ATH-A900 and ATH-AD900, these headphone recieves mostly positive
reviews and just need to know, which one do you guys think is better overall?

ATH-ESW9 kinda looks cool and recieved many positive reviews too, and maybe kinda cool because you can use it for portable use even though if i buy it, i'll be using it for home use mostly.

Right now i'm using a Sennheiser HD555 which i find doesn't sound good enough to my ear.

Which one do you guys thinks is the best overall? and if you have another suggestion that is still within the sub 300$ budget, i greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Thanks for the reply, looks like i'm leaning towards the D2000 again. I really wanted to know, how good is the bass is? is it tight and controlled, or has a powerful slam, or too bassy and muddy?

How about the soundstage, mids and highs people?
But i'm pretty sure they're really comfortable by it looks.

Anymore advice?

Thanks

I tried the D1000, its really really comfy. On par with my Darth Beyer or even better. Forget ESW9 if you're not going portable, circum-aural is really not comfy for long term use. I'm not saying they suck SQ wise, but comfort is gonna be a problem. I have the ES7 and love them to death but I can't use them for more than 3 hours.

I'm gonna get an AD2000 soon... was thinking about the AD900 a few months ago, but what the heck, might as well go for the top right?

I'd say in your case, get the AD900 or D2000, I don't think you'd be disappointed with either one.

AD900 would focus more on mids and sound stage while D2000 would have better bass impact and slam. The AD series of AT cans are known to have slightly prominent mids and fast clean bass.

To simplyfy your decision, consider the environment you're gonna be listening in, is the surrounding noisy?

If open set of headphone ==> AD900
If closed set of headphone ==> D2000

Simple.

Yes i think what i only need right now is pure SQ because my house is quiet enough, so open/closed design shouldn't matter too much. Thanks people for the recommendation for the Audio Technica AD2000, but it's kinda out of the budget right now. 500 bucks is quite much for a high school students i guess.

Maybe i'll consider the AD900 and D2000. Does anyone know how is the soundstage and clarity of Denon D2000? Maybe some short overall view of the phone except that i think everybody knows it has great bass response.

Thanks "head-fi"ers

I think you'll be quite happy with either one, but I recommend looking for some reviews on both 'phones. I thought soundstage of D2000 were quite all right (bit larger than AD900), though not as expansive as K701s.

I'm not completely sure, since it's been a while since I tried both 'phones.

Thx rednamalas, i've been searching for Denon's review and none of theme really tells what is the soundstage like.

Most of the review i've read only tells about the Bass (of course), mids and highs..

The D2000 has a much better resolution (almost DT880 league) than the A900, which is only solid midfi in comparison. Don't know the AD900, but I doubt it's a stronger performer than the A900. If you want a good fon and can stand some thunderous bass, the Denon is hardly to be beaten.

The D2000 soundscape is reasonable, but nothing extraordinary.

Dude, you are sooooooooo eeeeeevil !

You are one of the many fellas who poisoned me to get the AD2k... But then since you love your ES7 as much as I love mine, I guess I'll be very happy with the AD2k too...

@outbreak123, I think the D2000 should have an okay soundstage for a closed can. Like Rednamalas1 said, both cans are great and should make you happy. Flip a coin.

Yes, I had borrowed them for 2 weeks. They weren't bad. But not my cup of tea - too much bass. I had fatigue issues. Guess they become much better by the MarkL mod or something comparable taming the thunder. Unmodded not on par with DT880 or MS2 (or your AD2K).

Denon D2000 is
  1. two steps above A900
  2. one step above AD900
  3. half-step above AD1000
  4. the same level as W1000
Dunno about AD2000.

The soundstage on the D2000 is pretty good for a closed pair of headphones.

However it doesn't compare to the AD700s soundstage at all - that was huge when I had them. I imagine the soundstage would be the same on the AD900s and AD700s.

I'm really enjoying the D2000s, however sometimes I wish the mids were a bit more prominent. For example when listening to Bôa, sometimes the background music overpowers the vocals which annoys me a little. The same happens quite a lot, but no others come to mind right now.

I'm thinking about swapping for something else though, something with a little less bass.
