Are these headphones similar, clones I hear? The Aurvana can be had really cheap and if they're similar in quality to the Denon (which were being recommended to me at a $100 dollar price range). If I could snag these for $50 it would be a great deal for me.

See here for price.

The only thing that gets me is they don't look very comfortable?

from all I've heard they're extremely comfortable. Some prefer it to the D1001 comfort. I'm not sure of the exact differences, but the drivers are the same. I know that for both of them, the cables are a bottleneck.

Many people (myself included) find the CAL!s very comfortable. They're circumaural, fairly light, and don't clamp very hard. The only problem is they can get a bit hot after a while.

As for the CAL! vs. D1001k debate I can confirm that they have the same (Foster OEM) drivers and also the same pads. Whether the sound is completely identical I cannot say since the D1001s I took apart were not fully functional. Regardless, $55 is a stellar price for the CAL!s.

if by similar you mean the exact same made in the same place, then yes. they are made by Foster

I find the CAL! to be very satisfying. Deep, strong, bass. Yeah, it can get heavy at times, but that's just their character. Very well suited for rock and pop. Classical material can be a toss-up. Female vocals are well presented but some male voices and certain parts of the orchestra can be a little veiled. Piano works can be similarly hindered depending on the recording.

Overall though, I'm extremely happy with them. Best $55 I've ever spent on audio.

Also, they respond well to EQ and accept all of the recable and markl style mods that can be done to the D1001.

I bought my Denon D1001's for $63 originally.
later, I bought the CAL!'s for $55 for my girlfriend.

The D1001's are more comfortable and look better in my opinion. Well wroth the extra $7 I paid.

However, the CAL!'s are in no way bad, and if you're considering buying the D1001's for their new price of ~$100, getting the CAL!'s instead is a no brainer.

The D1001's are about $150 around here, the CAL!, about $55 USD (I can get a friend to send them across the border). I think this is the headphones I'm going to buy. Hopefully I'll be pleased with their sound over my HD201

Will these be a good alternative to the ATH-M40FS which are also in this price range?

I have the Cal! They Are really nice phones. Bass is strong, trebble are sweet, but the mids are the weakest part of them. but for 50-60 bucks.. it's a must. Fun phones !
