I have recently gone "headphoneampless" and so started using my Denon AVR 1802 receiver as my headphone amp. Actually, it's not bad at all. It's no RKV but it holds it's own especially with Rock music. I've been listening to the latest Cold CD "Year of the Spider" a lot lately and have been using my Beyer 770 headphones. The Denon had plenty of power to drive these headphones to insane levels. I had the treble flat but did up the bass to a +1. I found the Denon to work quite well. It's funny because my previous Denon totally sucked as a headphone amp. I guess they may have made some changes to the 1802 to make it sound a lot better. Right now I'm not missing a separate headphone amp.

thats really nice to know, as I've been considering picking up one of these next year at school and doing a cheap theater in my apartment.

you try driving any other phones with it?

I also had great luck with a Denon receiver as a headphone amp, in my case the AVR-5800. I was shocked at how good it sounded. Made me sell my Melos Maestro, as the Denon was nearly as good in many key areas.
