And now, for as long as the second set still has the stock cable, a brief comparison.

Hardware: Creative Audigy-2 Platinum, front panel headphone out.
Software: Foobar2000 -> ASIO 96/24 out.

Music: Joseph Haydn - [String Quartets Disc 1 #04] String Quartet In D, Op. 76, No. 5 - Finale - Presto - 96/24 FLAC, from the 2L online sampler, a free download.

Recabled headphones are louder. The stock loses roughly 9 dB. The volume knob is set at 12 o'clock, and with the recabled set the Foobar2000 volume control has to be at -9 dB for the recabled set to sound as muted as the stock set sounds at 0.

The first noticeable difference is space. There's a presence in the recabled set which is barely noticeable in the stock set. Attack and transitions are a lot sharper in the recabled set. AH-P372 are quick even with the stock cable, but the recable makes them extremely fast. Little details like musicians' breath and moving chairs become unveiled.

Everything's very fluid and musical. The stock AH-P372 are darkish and wooly by comparison. Recabled are so quick, they suck into music.

B. Britten - Simple Symphony, Op. 4 - Boisterous Bourrée, 192/24, Foobar2000 KS mode - from the same sampler page. Instrument separation is wonderful, orchestra plays like an array of instruments, not a single musician like it sometimes does on CDs. Stock AH-P372 don't show high-frequency space detail as well, and they're more laid-back - less presence, everything's darker and there's "wooliness". They still are pretty quick, but not as lively as the recabled set. They could be called more "analytical" if being more distant and dark qualifies. Recabled AH-P372 draw in, and have a closer picture. They place music around the head, stock AH-P372 place it by the sides and are dull. Recabled AH-P372 are intimate, harmonically warm (not tonally - they're not bassy/low-midrange-warm, they transmit harmonics accurately) and passionate.

There might be. The main ingredient is the wires.
