Denon AH-D9200 - 2018 Flagship - Impressions Thread

This is what lyd & bilde said ( norwegian hifi magazin ):

The AH-D5200 is "only" the second most expensive model from Denon, but it is difficult to hear where it has been saved, because they do it outright outstanding! In fact, I would venture the claim that it surpasses big brother AH-D7200 on several points.

The D5200 feel "cheaper" than its big sisters. Bit more plasticky with shallower pads .. My gut feeling also says they used PLeather instead of Leather? Anyway, D5200 has a sharper roll-off in the upper frequencies, and as such sounds a bit more darker compressed and still a tad sibilant. And the bass is a tad more overbearing. The D7200 has a more refined soundscape, less overbearing lows but better defined and better layered. Gives a much opener picture in comparison and much more musicality and fun. The D9200 does everything better (just not $900 better btw) than the D7200, but with a good source, the D7200 comes a very long way indeed. But if you are serious about your hi-res source material and amplification, then the D5200 does not do justice to it. Not suited for really critical listening I guess ...

I will use the denons for just pure fun music listening.I also have the celestee, wich might be for more critical listening.Have to test these more.

Its not that big gap in price between the 7200 and the 5200.Hard choice 🤔

Sorry to quote an old post but what I was wondering what were your impressions of the TH909 compared with the D9200? I'm trying to decide between the two but cant seem to find many direct comparisons, I owned a TH900 previously which I enjoyed a lot so was interested in the TH909 but the D9200 also has me interested as it sounds like they may be slightly better all-rounders than the Fostex (will be using them for quite a wide variety of music as well as watching movies).
I only had the TH909 SB for about 2 weeks, but still have and appreciate the D9200 - which is really a great all-rounder. The TH909 hits like a truck in the bass department, but is more often at the edge of being sibilant....but on the right amp and right tracks its a really engaging headphone, if you can 'stand' to stay directly in front of the vocalist's microphone on stage :) So I also suggest to go with the D9200.

I had all three .. And after upgrading never looked back .. I found the D7200 to be a fantastic match with my FiiO M11 Pro and the D9200 a fantastic match with the FiiO M15 .... Had I known the differences between the three, I would have started with the D7200 immediately ... Or actually, gone to the D9200 immediately. Because that currently is my end-game closed-back .. the D9200 sits so darn close to the ZMF Verite .. and the D7200 delivers at least 80% of the D9200

Note: about your comment about fun listening .. In your situation I would even consider skipping the celestee and the D5200 altogether. The D7200 and D9200 are both fantastic all-rounders. One might say they're both a bit tame, but that actually makes them so well-suited for all kinds of music .. And don't underestimate the bass attack of both headphones .. They can seriously rumble when needed ...

No problems at all!

The TH909 are open backs (though they're technically Semi open backs), so if you're looking for isolation the D9200 will be a better fit for that role.

As you mentioned, the D9200 are better all-rounders than the 909s and worked fine with all of my amps and DAPs, however, the TH909 is so picky due to its very low impedance, you might have a hard time finding an excellent amp that it won't sound shrill and sibilant with. In my case, the TH909 sounded good through the PS5 controller headphone jack (strange, I know :)), iFi Micro BL, Chord Stack and the Shanling M30. All my other gear didn't pair well with the Fostex especially the iBasso DX300 DAP which otherwise sounded fantastic paired with the D9200.

So if you have a budget for only one headphone, grab the D9200 and enjoy. The TH909 are a fun listen but extremely picky about the amps that you're going to use. :)

I only had the TH909 SB for about 2 weeks, but still have and appreciate the D9200 - which is really a great all-rounder. Thanks for your impressions, I think I will be going with the D9200 :)

I've yet to hear a Denon that is flat enough that it eschews any semblance of "fun" or "musicality". Truth be told, the Denon "house" sound has always aligned itself closer to the spectrum of melody than neutrality. :)

You will not regret that .. I had a studio engineer in awe yesterday after hearing the MQA version of Hotel California (Hell Freezes Over) on my D9200 ... The attack and slam on that track of the D9200 is amazing .. And wiped the floor with all cans that he had in his studio, including an LCD-3

Really good choice. :)

Have fun with the D7200.

Was thinking of buying them again. ^^
They'll suit my preferences (with narrower pads to tame the bass a bit) better than the D9200, i've to say.

Sorry, but my ears told me and i can't argue against.

Or i'm going to buy them and change the headband with the D9200 and get new pads (SR-009).
Then i'm done with closed backs for a long time. ^^ hopefully

Upgraditis is nudging me so I have some questions to see where one would land. I have been very happy with my D5200. Though I am curious about what path to take since the LCD X has been a grail headphone of mine despite not knowing what any planar sounds like. Just have seen all of the gushing over it and moreso lately with the tuning of the 2021 version. However, the D5200 has been such a pleasant experience that it makes me wonder about the d7200 and the d9200. What are the improvements that one would expect? Also it seems their dollar value isn't as high as the d5200. Yet how would something like the 7200/9200 compare to the LCDX 2021(I know open versus closed) since I do not need closed but I appreciate the different sound presentations. If I am going to drop $1k+ on a can then it will be on a singular headphone... for now.
