Hey Guys, I have a Dell Axim x51v and I think it's an okay portable dap. I'm wonder what you guys think about it as a portable dap? I would like recommendations on headphones also? I'm looking for more of a full sized headphone as i don't really like IEM's. My budget is around 200-300 usd and I am not planning on portable amping. Is it worth it to spend this much on headphones with this device? Thanks Guys. I will be listening to Classical mainly and some R&B/Rock/ and some occasional Rap.

You've answered the question yourself. Why care about what people think when you feel that it's okay?

It's not a good idea to use a full-sized with that PDA, especially you don't want to use a portable amp. Most of the PDAs I tried before have really noisy headphone outs and low power output.

I tried some cheap headphones walmart headphone but don't hear any noticeable hiss? I was planing to get the Cowon S9 but i wanted removeable memory and bigger memory. I just bought a 32gb card for my axim too. I was looking at the Audio Technica ATH a900. What do you guys think?

I never found the audio from my Dell to be up to much, and i found the software useless to navigate. I didn't realise you could use a 32gb sdhc card in there!
I bought a Sansa Fuze for 50 pounds, and an 8gb card, a really grest little player.

x51v is a wonderful device. I had the x50v whose features were years ahead of its competition, even current iPod Touch.

SDHC is compatible if you install WM6. The default media player isn't that great. I suggest trying out Pocket Tunes or Pocket Player instead.

I use a Toshiba e830 with 32GB CF Card, various 4GB SD Cards and an external 180GB 1.8" Hard Drive as sources.

Systems software is WM2003SE coupled with Pocket Music or Core Player for audio and video respectively, although Core Player is used by many as a single solution for both.

Earphones are Westone 3s. Also an RSA Predator amp some of the time.

Overall performance is very good, although probably not as good as might be achieved with a high end dedicated device that can provide a digital output to eg. play via Predator's DAC. I would expect the Dell to provide comparable results.

If it sounds good and you are happy with it - then that is all that matters !

Best regards,

Kevin

I used to use my X50V as a DAP with Pocket Player.

The sound was quite good for a PDA, light years ahead of my old HP PDA.

Took a lot of configuration ot get Pocket Player setup so I felt I could navigate intuitively without the stylus and setup playlists.

Other downsides are the size, and very short battery life for a DAP.

As a DAP it's not bad, but I carry around my Sansa Fuze as it's a better solution and dirt cheap.

my 2ps worth

don't bother - I never found my Axim X51V much cop for audio at all, and not that great for video either. For video - the screen res is superb, but the overall LCD quality (viewing angle etc) - isn't a patch on the later IPODs, newer multimedia devices etc

Hey Guys, Well i bought the ATH-A900 and it sounds pretty good too me. Mainly because i haven't had any chance to do A/B comparisons with anything else (sansa/sony/cowon/ipod) I will test on an iphone 3g tonight. I wonder if the difference THAT noticeable? lol I'll just have to see.
