Hello Head-fiers,

Anyone using Dekoni Nuggets with Audeze LCD 'phones? (LCD-2 fazor in my case) I have bought some but have not peeled off the backing to attach them permanently. Can anyone share suggestions on how to position them?

We have used them on our show LCD 2 since the Nuggets were in their first prototypes! The LCD 2 is one of the larger, heavier headphones, so we recommend two or more Nuggets to spread out the weight being held by the headband. Before you peel off the adhesive (the current gen red 3M adhesive will stay on better), you can try just sliding the Nuggets between the headband and your head while wearing them, and see what you like.

We have two nuggets arranged with the short side of each facing front, so that the long side spans the width of the headband, centered on the sections already on the LCD’s headband. You should also try all four, spaced evenly kind of like a Sennheiser HD 600 or AKG K701 headband, to really distribute the weight, but note that each nugget will make less contact with your head the further off center you place them.

You can see a few more placement options at the end of this (one minute) video:

Thanks for purchasing our product!!

Hello all,

I thought I'd post the review I wrote for the Dekoni Choice Suede and Leather pads I wrote on Drop:
Absolutely wonderful record of your experience. Can we highlight this and share a link to it on our Facebook, please?

Can you guys do graphs of LCD2 classic with your Suede pads, as well as the Fostex Ebony with suede pads?
Right now, we haven’t made Suede Pads for the Fostex... at least not yet.
Fostex/Massdrop Pads page:
https://dekoniaudio.com/filter/?product_cat=massdrop-x00

We DO have Choice Suede and Choice Leather for the LCD’s, we’ll formalize some measurements for them inbetween working on some more new products... our Grado pads are sounding great and so close to ready! The next Pads we want to dive into on this blog/thread would be the HD 800, it’s a bit overdue
Audeze LCD series Pads page:
https://dekoniaudio.com/filter/?product_cat=lcd-2-classic

Any planned deep dive with your Hifiman pad lineup?
Of course!! We’re going to get measurements of everything we make eventually, it’s just that we have some catching up to do from our upgraded rig. You should see many Deep dives this year, hopefully a few per month!

I would love some suede pads for the big boy Hifiman cans.
Saaaaaame here.

Any plan for new HD800 measurements?
Of course!! Our apologies, this is probably our highest priority measurement to get next, since it was highly requested :)

We do have some partial Fostex TH-X00 measurements with and without the attenuation ring, but we need help to borrow a pair of stock pads to complete the comparison. Apparently, ours rolled off the table, and on to the floor, and then our poor stock earpads, they rolled right out the door. Just like a tasty meatball... we’ll finally know what happened to them if an Earpad tree starts growing up through the cracks in our parking lot.

Thanks Dekoni,
I was already trying them without peeling the backing, just as you suggested. I'm thinking it is probably best to conform to the segmentation already on the headband, so as to provide the best surface for the Nugget's adhesive.

By all means! I am trying to reacquire a pair of LCD-XC to install those Choice Suede pads. Stay tuned!

Dekoni Audio is pleased to share a “deep dive” look into our Sennheiser HD 800 line of Earpads, specifically tuned to elevate your listening experience.

We start with comfort, using our soft, high density, slow rebound memory foam for an extra plush experience that conforms to the shape of your face (and accommodates glasses stems). Like all our earpads, they are offered in a wide range of fabric options, including Elite Sheepskin, Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin, Elite Velour, and our Elite Hybrid pads. We ensured the pads mount just as securely as the stock pads – these pads will fit the HD 800 and HD 800 S, but they will not fit the HD 820, which has a different mount. Finally, we shaped and measured the pads to tune the sound and share a preview of how they sound compared to stock pads.

In our measurements, we use the measurement data from the headphone coupled with the realistic ears of our microphone dummy head. We have been fortunate to have acquired a certain well-known Audio Precision-based measurement rig, and will continue to keep the measurements coming! The data is presented raw and uncompensated, except to cancel out the ear response of our microphone dummy head, and it’s the average data from 5 slightly different seatings of the headphone. Some measurements by others are made without headphones actually sitting on ears, or with adjustments to reflect the effect that the shape of a generic inner and outer ear will have on the sound waves – we don’t do that, because as every experienced audio enthusiast knows, we all have different ears! So, as part of a series of Dekoni Describes posts, we will walk our readers through understanding our graphs.

6YPMK7SP60KbR0jmeC209Bgc6rXEV8aU9--Mw3Fqz0l0VBK6W0tbVHDZdgR_f8XjAEYCHxYQrL7WZRFZ5g7uLHXVHl6KErEQ6ZHV2K-hZ9v6YyN7dLfNw-yHriqIqn3GWiRJ_3kq

The first thing to understand about an uncompensated graph is that it will sound different to the listener than the graph will show. For one, we haven’t smoothed our graphs, so there are many peaks and valleys that would have been lost information, but also there are other factors, such as the effect from the earcups and pads resting against a head and around ears, the human ear’s extra sensitivity to vocals, and that the shape of our ears and depth of our ear canals can actually amplify certain frequencies. For the purposes of swapping earpads, it is enough to say that a flat line along the 0 dB line wouldn’t sound “good” on these uncompensated graphs, a dip in the midrange is to be expected since human ears are more sensitive to that region, and mainly we want to focus on how a Dekoni pad compares to the Stock pad. With our measurements, we used the classic HD 800, which comes Stock with Sennheiser’s microsuede pad.

We use supple, natural Sheepskin that is the softest and most breathable available today, available in solid or Fenestrated. With our solid Sheepskin, overall we see a similar frequency response curve shape as stock, except the sub-bass “rumble” response gently rolls off more than before. Great for anyone who chooses the HD 800 for tight bass, emphasis on the midrange and treble, and prefers the feel of leather (and thicker, memory foam pads).

Our Fenestrated (French for “windowed,” it has little holes in it) Sheepskin also has lighter sub-bass than stock, and a little more midrange relative to the bass. One thing the graphs don’t show but we hear all the time from our customers: the Fenestrated Sheepskin seems to unmask extra detail. This has been very popular for this model! Fenestrations are also airy in that they allow some more heat to escape through the pads, but the holes are small enough to allow a damp cloth to wipe away sweat and grime easily without damaging the memory foam beneath.

Our Elite Velour has a higher thread count and tighter weave than typical velour pads, soft and breathable but as you can see the performance is similar to sheepskin, with a bit more upper midrange and lower treble energy, so choose based on your textile preference! Also worth mentioning is the improved comfort due to the less stiff, deeper memory foam which also retains its shape better through repeat listens.

Our Hybrid pads, which are sealed with sleek and solid Sheepskin on the outside face, neutral Fenestrated Sheepskin on the inner face, and sweat-wicking Velour on the face facing your face, measure the closest to Sennheiser’s stock pads, with less sub-bass roll off compared to the other pads, and a bit more upper-midrange energy and “air” in the highest ranges of our hearing which helps with positional accuracy and sense of soundstage space.

The subjective factor of experiencing headphones and earpads matters the most, of course. If it sounds good, it is good! We listen with our pads for several revisions before release, and we want to thank the reviewers and our patrons on Head-Fi and other platforms who have shared their experiences. Real user experience is the best judge, and we thank everyone who has tried to describe their experience!

Our Sennheiser pads are available now at our fine dealers internationally, and dekoniaudio.com.

Dekoni Audio is pleased to share a “deep dive” look into our Audio Technica M50x line of Earpads, specifically tuned to elevate your listening experience.

We start with comfort, using our soft, high density, slow rebound memory foam for an extra plush experience that conforms to the shape of your face (and accommodates glasses stems). Like all our earpads, they are offered in a wide range of fabric options, including Elite Sheepskin, Elite Velour, Choice Leather, Choice Suede, Choice Hybrid, and our Protein Leather pads. Finally, we shaped and measured the pads to tune the sound and share a preview of how they sound compared to stock pads.

Our Protein Leather also has mildly lighter sub-bass (mostly it just sounds less boomy) and a more linear progression from bass to mids to treble. The upper mids and upper treble have a little less energy now, so if you ever felt the midrange of the stock pads (which lack the typical midrange bowl we would expect to see in an uncompensated RAW graph!) was too shouty or the treble was too hot, these could be a great option! Our Protein Leather is also more special than (plastic) pleather, as the eggshell membrane protein results in a more supple, moisturized and soft material.

Our Elite Velour has a higher thread count and tighter weave than typical velour pads, soft and breathable but as you can see the performance is similar to a sealed pad (and the stock pad!), with a little more quantity of low-midrange and sub bass. If you need something to wick away sweat and stay noticeably cooler than the stock pads, the Elite Velour are for you!

Our Choice Hybrid pads are sealed with sleek and solid Choice Leather on the outside face and inner face, and soft Choice Suede on the face facing your face that won’t stick to your skin. This pad measures the close to the Velour and is shaped similarly to Audio Technica’s stock pads, with more sub-bass and low mids compared to the other pads, no more 4.5 kHz spike, and a bit more upper-midrange energy and “air” in the highest ranges of our hearing which helps with positional accuracy and sense of soundstage space.

Choice Leather is a super soft synthetic leather, offering an animal-free option. With a steeper dip in the midrange, the headphone sounds stronger in the bass than before, for a more exciting sound great for those deep electronic beats, but also smooths out the upper midrange spike centered around 4.5 kHz. 4.5kHz spikes are often correlated with sibilance, so this could be a great solution for taming more edgy harmonicas and violins.
VK8xHftzDXmdfrdSjMUQrjOrQBpkNsh1AO-3JDmf551GDFxLN-SiLGAVKa2rpR7OpIiUuwsCKBdYSVrKcxHNeSzy2IpN_SSr8azduO-4MzgdE3-XpIv8KCgKdK0agIj0j9_jZmnF

Choice Suede has a similar sound to Choice Leather, because both are actually sealed synthetic pads! The sound still has the smooth volume transition between (a touch extra) sub bass and midrange with no spike, and the stock dip at 6.5 kHz has shifted down to 5.5 kHz, so the sound may seem more romanticised. Our Choice Suede is also our most luxuriously soft textured pad textile, while also avoiding the stickiness that sometimes happens with smooth pads.

Our Audio Technica pads are available now at our fine dealers internationally, and dekoniaudio.com.

Apologies, it may be more of a Latin root than originating in France, but someone told us a fascinating anecdote that stuck in our minds. Here's a dictionary definition of Fenestrated for you, which does appear to be linked to "windowed":
Screen Shot 2020-02-23 at 1.26.44 PM.png

It's a fun word, and the little holes are a technique sometimes used to tune earpads.

I usually like to go with genuine leather for longetivity of stuff. But will the memory foam expire anyways?
In a basic sense, foam is like soap bubbles, a matrix of pockets of air connected by small amounts of material. Our closed cell, medium density memory foam is far less delicate than soap and should give you many years of use if cared for properly (the biggest tip we can give you there: don't submerge foam in water! It will start to break down faster), and should outlast our two-year warranty. Genuine leather will protect the foam inside to an extent, and is easy to clean by wiping it off with a damp cloth, or our new cleaning products. In our testing, our memory foam maintains its elasticity longer than other foams or batting.

Dekoni Audio is pleased to share a “deep dive” look into our Sennheiser Game One line of Earpads, specifically tuned to elevate your listening experience.

We start with comfort, using our soft, high density, slow rebound memory foam for an extra plush experience that conforms to the shape of your face (and accommodates glasses stems). For high quality performance, durability, and feel, we have covered the memory foam with Choice Leather. We ensured the pads mount just as securely as the stock pads. These pads fit a wide variety of headphones, from the legendary Sennheiser HD 598, HD558, modern HD 599 and HD 559, and also the headset champions PC 360, Game One, and Drop Exclusive PC37X, and many more. These do NOT fit the HD 58X Jubilee, but we do make pads for that! Finally, we shaped and measured the pads to tune the sound and share a preview of how they sound compared to stock pads.

In our measurements, we are sharing the raw data except to cancel out the ear response of our microphone dummy head. We have been fortunate to have acquired a certain well-known Audio Precision-based measurement rig, and will continue to keep the measurements coming! Some measurements by others are made with adjustments to reflect the effect that the shape of a generic inner and outer ear will have on the sound waves – we provide the raw data, because as every experienced audio enthusiast knows, we all have different ears! The first thing to understand about an uncompensated graph is that it will sound different to the listener than the graph will show. We use supple, animal-free Choice Leather that is the softest synthetic available today. The graph shows us a similar character to the stock Velour pads, with more midbass over a wide range of frequencies, and a narrow decrease in brightness at about 4 kHz, though overall it has dips and peaks in amplitude in all the same places, keeping the same overall character. If you were a gamer wanting gunshots to sound more meaty but have less fatiguing bite, this is a good pad for you! The Choice Leather is also excellent for trying hard and playing sweaty, because it easily wipes clean with a damp cloth or our safe cleaning products.

Having a hard time seeing how the midrange is mostly similar between the stock and Choice Leather pads? We usually only publish our graphs with the different frequency curves overlaid to line up at 300 Hz for consistency, but if we move them to overlay at the midrange, say around 2.5 kHz, you get the dark purple line as seen here:

For the purposes of swapping earpads, it is enough to say that a flat line along the 0 dB line wouldn’t sound “good” on these uncompensated graphs, and mainly we want to focus on how a Dekoni pad compares to the Stock pad. With our measurements, we used the Fostex TH-900 Mark 2, which comes Stock with Fostex’s Protein Leather.

We use supple, natural Sheepskin that is the softest and most breathable available today, available in solid or Fenestrated. With our solid Sheepskin, overall we see a similar shaped frequency response and only a small deviation from stock, where the biggest change is a bit less energy around the bass and subbass range. Keep in mind it is harder for ear-sized microphones to accurately “hear” the lowest bass notes, and the little “bowl” in the midrange between 1kHz and 5 kHz is normal, because without it, vocals would sound “shouty” and louder than the extended frequencies!

Our Fenestrated Sheepskin is also similar in shape to the stock pad, though the midrange is elevated and more “forward” relative to stock, except near 3k-4k Hz which is very close to stock. This creates a more intimate presentation, great for people who enjoy Bio-Cellulose drivers yet wish for a more upfront presentation that focuses on vocals, guitars, violins, and ought to please the band Oppenheimer (check out their album names). Fenestrations are also airy in that they allow some more heat to escape through the pads. Your mileage may vary, so it’s up to your ears (everyone’s is different!) to decide which of these raw, uncompensated graphs correlates with a sound that is more neutral to you!

Our Elite Velour has a higher thread count and tighter weave than typical velour pads, soft and breathable but as you can see there is no loss of foundational bass – in fact it traces very similar to the Fenestrated Sheepskin pads on this headphone, with just a bit more subbass. In fact, this is a great opportunity to choose based on your comfort preference for cloth or leather, contrary to most velours which lose low end and high end pitch quantity that leave a bare midrange.

Our Hybrid pads, which are sealed with solid Sheepskin on the outside face, neutral Fenestrated Sheepskin on the inner face, and comfortable with Velour on the face facing your face, may at first seem to have the most bass sensitivity, but if you consider that the difference between the highest dB of the bass to the lowest dB of midrange is 16 dB on both raw graphs, the Hybrid actually has a close correlation to the stock pad, with moderately less energy in the 400-500 Hz midbass range for people that find the TH-900 too warm and thick sounding.

The subjective factor of experiencing headphones and ear pads matters the most, of course. If it sounds good, it is good! One great feature of Fostex’s pad mount design is the relative ease of changing pads, so pads can be changed on a whim. We listen with our pads for several revisions before release, and we want to thank the reviewers and our patrons on Head-Fi and other platforms who have shared their experiences. Real user experience is the best judge, and we thank everyone who has tried to describe their experience!

Dekoni TH-900 pads attach to the Fostex TH-900 mk1 and mk2, TH-909, TH-600 and 610, are another option for Drop.com’s TH- and TR-X00 of every wood variety, as well as headphones from other companies such as Denon D7000, D5000, D2000 and EMU Teak. Dekoni TH-900 pads are available now at our fine dealers internationally and dekoniaudio.com.

Dekoni Audio is pleased to announce new pads for the instant classic Meze 99 series headphones!

The Meze Classic 99 is a luxury to hold and feel, with its use of premium materials. The mature walnut wood, which is CNC’d, sanded, air dried, lacquered, and finished in 45 days for each pair of earcups. Beautiful metal in the manganese spring steel headband and the shiny electroplated zinc hardware. “No plastic anywhere.”

However, the stock pads are PU Leather – polyurethane. Meze values memory foam like Dekoni, but Dekoni is the specialist for real leather pads! We thought that using a natural product, specifically our Sheepskin leather because it has smooth fine-grain, a thin and pliable feel, traps less heat to stay cooler, and doesn’t dry up and feel as hard as cowhide. These qualities make Sheepskin the best natural leather to use for earpads.

We reached out to Meze Audio to collaborate on the pads, which was a fantastic experience. Antonio Meze is as warm and likable as his headphones, but he also helped us focus on the qualities that stay true to the design intent of the Classic 99. We tried out several iterations of pads, including our usual fenestrated and velour options, but it became clear that Sheepskin was going to be the winning pad that maintained and enhanced the robust character of the Classic 99 without compromising what people like about the headphone. Shown here matched up at 1 kHz, you can see the Dekoni pads closely match the originals, with a drop in the midbass so that there’s less chance of the bass bleeding over the mids.

So, with Meze’s approval, Dekoni is proud to present the Classic 99 pads in Sheepskin, with ultra dense memory foam. These pads provide a real leather upgrade to match the class of the metal and Walnut in the Classic 99, as well as matching the Noir 99 and Neo 99, all while preserving the full-bodied yet crisp and clear sound intended by Meze. With an MSRP of $79, ask your favorite retailer because we’re shipping now!
