Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has tried the Decware Zen head portable head phone amp. Link to site is
http://www.decware.com/newsite/zenhead.htm. It seems like a good product and the company makes nice looking gear.

I have a pair of AKG K 701 cans and would like to know if these would be a good match with the zen head, if not what would be a better match. I thought there would be a review on this forum for the zen head but can't seem to find one.

You have to remove the "." at the end of the url.

I love the '70's look about it and design philosophy, but pity about the OPA2132, but we'll have to see if he can be persuaded to put it in a socket instead of just soldering it in.

I'm sure Skylab will get his hands on one shortly too.

Hi Currawong,

Thanks for your response, thanks for clearing up the link issue. Yes it would be good if Skylab could do a review on this product. Skylab did at some time own a preamp / headphone amp, model CSP2 made by Decware which he seemed to like. Decware also make a kit version of the portable headphone amp whick can be seen here.

This is only $155.00, seems like a very good deal. Just need to make the case for it to live in.

Hopefully we get a good review soon.

The ZH-1 is a great amp and like Steve Deckert claims, has that tube like sound.  I bought the kit a while back with plans to make it in a block of wood for home use only, but sold it off for lack of time and commitment.   I later bought the full version, but didn't use much due to it's larger than usual portable head amp size.   I never tried with the K701, just the Senns HD600 and Grado.  I would shoot an email or call Steve directly to see what tweaks he may suggest to optimize the amp to your cans.

Sometime back I believe Skylab  reviewed the ZenHead.  IIRC, at that time, I believe it was ranked #7 among those tested.   I also owned one and found it to be a capable performer.   Sizewise, it is best used as a bedside or desktop amp as it is larger than most "portable" devices.
