Hi,

I'm looking for headphones that would perform well with classic jazz (Miles Davis, etc.) as well as classic (Pink Floyd) and hard rock (King's X). I am looking in the $200 range. Right now I am considering these 2 models:

Sennheiser HD 580
Grado SR225

Thanks in advance for any advice you may give!

We could provide better advice if you provide more info regarding which type of source are you using, and which amplifier.

I've found Senns to synergyze differently among the available amps. Either solid state or tube. I find the Grados to be a bit less amp dependent on their sound. Regardless, both of the headphones you mention will benefit of a good amplifier.

I would suggest you audition them before if you can. The differences between those headphones, in terms of wear and sound are significant. But it would ultimatedly depend on your listening preferences.

welcome to head-fi, sorry about the wallet. (standard greeting around here)

yeah, hd580s and sr225s are kind of night and day different. (well actually i haven't heard either but i'm going off my experiences with hd600s and rs-1s.)

basically grados are known for their impact and forward sounding dynamic qualities while sennheisers favor a more smooth laid back polite approach. from what i've heard both the 580 and the 225s are very good headphones and also very good values too.

are you going to be running a dedicated amp? if not i say get the grados. if you are or plan to by one soon then i guess you've got a tough choice ahead.

good luck. happy listening.
