Decision time! (Sony MDR-F1 vs. AKG K701)

The main problem I noted is that it can't deal with tecno, rap, heavy metal etc, so it is not a good all round headphone for sure.

*Sigh*

The DT880's have recessed mids whilst the K701's arn't an all-round 'phone..

I can't win!!!

With the right combo, the 701s are the most musical cans I heard single ended. Bada12/DAC1 Sound is simply jaw dropping..

I don't know where all this K701 bashing is coming from. Admittedly I have never heard them stock, but I think they are really something else. As for what genres of music they work for, they do most everything damn well, I wouldn't however choose them for the faster dance music (130bpm range) as they lack the bass impact that makes one move, they do really well with slower paced electronic music though. I am selling the Beyers I got (600 ohm) because I just think the K701 is much more musical whilst sounding natural, and being neutral. Am listening to some dub right now, and while the AKG's lack the impact they do wonderfully convey the depth and strength of the basslines. As for rock, they again lack impact but do convey the complexities and the movement that is in the bass. Bass is deep and well controlled.

For gaming the DT-880's win no question, they are more detailed and have better imaging. The DT-880's do have a fuller sound to them, but I wouldn't say the 701's are thin, and I wouldn't say they are analytical either. One thing I noticed when I first got the AKG's and tried to play counterstrike source (just deathmatch with sound off and music playing like I always do) was that I couldn't really concentrate on the game. I was like What I never heard this before. The AKG's demand attention in a way that the Beyers never did for me.

But again, mine are recabled, although I don't imagine they make such a huge improvement of what some claim stock to be.

I did say that once. But now I don't think recessed is the right term. They're possibly not as present as the rest of the music and seem detached but they're not exactly recessed. Nor are they 'sweet' like the 701's.

I think the K701's are either a love or hate thing (like grado's). Some find them unnatural but I find them very natural. The Listening Post sells K701's so maybe you could demo some there?

Well I'm tossing up the Beyer DT880 (most likely '05/'06 250 ohm edition, but I know a store that sell Beyers so I'll check them out tomorrow as I have time). and K701's really.

Care to elaborate on why you think the K701 + Corda Headfive synergy is bad?

The DT880's reported recessed mids are really putting it down atm.

Can't find the apparently more natural K501 anywhere.
Thing is, Corda Headfive = reported slight bass boost.
Combine this with the LM4562 opamp in my Prelude = bass boost.

Combine this with the supposed K701 lack of bass quantity wise...

Hell, if the LM4562 can make my low bass AD700's have the sufficient bass I want (not too much, not too less) unamped and un-EQ'ed.....
Also I need the soundstage and imaging for gaming purposes and the K-701's are reportedly better in those aspects than the DT880.

I'd rather have synergy.

Of all my phones the DT880 is the most difficult to drive. This week I finally purchased an amp that does it justice and that's the AV123 X-Head ($199 + $20 shipping US). The DT880 is a surperb phone which needs a powerful amp to make it really sing. With a modest amp, the HD600 is a better choice.

.....(say, a Corda Arietta for $250 or upcoming AV123 X-Head for $200)....

As the H5 = near an Arietta, the H5 does this 'justice'?

Got my eyes set firmly on some DT880's.

Naa no Beyers... And don't buy from them. K701s are something like $700. And my old english teacher works there so I don't go there any more

fraseyboy,

I read that you like cans with wide soundstage.

Have you tried F1?

I am considering F1 and AD700 which you recommends a lot.

Is Ad700 still your favorite can now?
