decent headphones around $50?

I know two choices. Maybe:

1) Koss KSC75($20 or less from Amazon)
2) Sennheiser EH150 $40

I personally no longer own cheap headphones, but I did start off with the Senns. The Koss phones I've heard they sound real good for the price around here, though I've never heard a pair.

Edit: I kinda forgot you mentioned "big ear-covering" ones, so you can disregard the Koss phones since they're clip ons and not exactly full size.

MDR-V6 should be a jump start from headphones.

Why pay $45 for a used SR-60 when that's probably within $10 of the cost of a new pair at TTVJ as a first-time head-fi-referred customer?

They are also neither big nor ear-covering.

They cover my ears completely, but sit on top of them. I think this still fits what the OP is looking for.

And I recommend the SR60 as well. Fantastic headphones for their price, can't be beat. From TTVJ they're $69-$10+shipping. You can buy a pair on amazon for $69, no tax (CA!) & free fedex shipping as well if you want to hold onto that $10 "new customer" discount at ttvj.

Not ear covering? That's a pretty absurd claim. Are you an elephant?

Edit: Damn.. SR60's don't come with bowls stock

Well.. I guess you're not an elephant.

That Sennheiser is crap. For $40? Are you kidding me? That's worth $10 to me.

You should be able to snag a pair of Sextets for under that on ebay. (just remember they're not always being sold, but a bunch usually pop up every so often)

They won't sound as good without an(y) amp, but I don't think you could do better for bang/buck.

If you need closed headphones, get a pair of Sony MDR-V6. If open are okay, get a pair of SR60s.

What kind of amp are you using?

If you will be using a receiver/speaker amp's headphone jack, it is hard to beat the MB Quart QP45x/55x in that price range. They are comfy, covering the whole ear.

The QP's have their own SQ weaknesses but for under $50 new there really isn't anything circumaural to compete with them.(I like them better than the Senn555, which is usually a $80 phone).
But the QP's do require strong amping.
