I'd prefer the kind with two little desk speakers and one big under-the-desk one. 2.1 system, I think its called? (Sorry I don't know the terminology...

yeah, its a 2.1 system. the .1 refers to the subwoofer, or the big speaker under the desk. it seems the 2 top dogs in consumer computer speakers are logitech and klipsh. theres the klipsh promedia 2.1. as for the logitech model, im not too familiar with.

I have the Klipsch 2.1 system at work. It's OK for what it is (cheap multimedia speakers). Kinda bright, but fairly detailed and punchy.

Anyone heard the Altec Lansing MX5021?

I'd recommend to grab JBL's Control Media system, if you can still find it somewhere...

Right now I think the MX5021's are the king of the hill, I'd get them over the Klipsch's if I were you.

Really? That much better. Interesting indeed. Anyone seen a comparative review somewhere? I'd love to see such a beast.

I got a pair of Bose Media Mates for $70 from an internet site if I was willing to take the Ice Blue model and wait about three weeks for them to be shipped. They have a fairly long break-in period (about three weeks). After that, I've been happy with their sound. And they've got two pairs of RCA input jacks and a way to switch between inputs, so I can easily share the speakers between my sources. The headphone jack on the Media Mates gives the sound in a very high quality bass boost. Overall, I'm very happy with the Media Mates.

They supposedly have a very sweet midrange, a good high end, and nice punchy bass.

I'd run a search on the klipsch.com discussion board and see if TheEar has done a comparaison (the man has owned almost every MM system ever out)
