Panny 50s are crap. Sony EX-81 are OK but not good. I can get the Ultimate Ears 3 for $70. Is it actually good, with no offensive qualities? I don't want to buy another bad set. What about the Apple In-ear phones?

I don't care for the Panasonics all that much, either. Try the new Sennheiser canal phones -- right in your price range. Lots of commentary on them in these forums, in other threads.

What kind of music do you listen to?

The super.fi 3 seem like they might work for you and 70 bucks seems fair. The Senn's are getting a lot of hype right now. Ety ER-6i's are great starter IEM's, though you might not like how far you need to stick them in your ears and the bass impact isn't quite there. But for clarity, I think the ER-6i is the way to go.

You don't even really need an amp.

I don't think I'll be using IEMs most of the time, so basically what I really want is something that has no objectional qualities, no huge imbalance, no obnoxious resonances. Is anyone offended by the Creatives? Etys are out of my league. $70 tops.

I might get the Koss's, or I might get PX-100s at some point. I think I'd either like just earbuds for open sound or I'd go up to the Senns.

True, but the Kosses definitely sound better with an amp.
