Hi Guys,

I've been listening to several metal cds through my new HD 650s, using total bithead (for the time being) fed from my macbook. I'm noticing some crackling that seems to follow certain guitar riffs and it's driving me f'n nuts. Can anyone relate to this? I'm just trying to confirm that it is the recording and not my gear. The phones have 100+ hrs on them of break in. I've heard the same crackling from my HD 212s previously.

I've got a LD MK V amp that should arrive within a couple weeks, so I can eliminate the bithead then.

Example CDs:
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe

Am I just a victim of the loudness wars?

Any info would be appreciated...

Blood mountain has some parts in it that have intense clipping. One example is Bladecatcher, at the very end guitar chord.

Another example is colony of birchmen, especially the beginning and the last minute of the song.

It's probably not your gear.

How do the original CD sound like to u from your big stereo?

Make sure your ripping software is not clipping them.

Source material clipping is just sad. If so, anybody knows a software fix?

I guess I have heard it a bit on my stereo (Don't have a "big" stereo yet, living in condo)

It's a lot more "in my face" now with the phones.

This is happening while playing the CD on my macbook, no ripping involved...

Thanks for the confirmation Punnisher. It's a shame... Reminds me of Spinal Tap: "This one goes to eleven!"
