OK, I'll put this in short. I used to think that ER-4B is biased cans for ones who prefer brighter sound as more musical tones. But after I get this rig...
Player: Rockboxed iRiver H320 lineout
Adaptor: premium mini to RCA (around 2-3 bucks since I couldn't find great ones like cardas in Thailand BUT it shouldn't make big difference just from portable's lineout)
Cable: Purist Audio Design's Aqueous RCA (I'm pretty confident in this cable for the combination with ER-4 series)
Headphone amp: Stello's HP100 (My friend who is hardcore ety's fan who's working for high-end audio equipment dealer recommended this model with confident for below 1000USD price range)
That's it. After listening to this setup that passed 50hrs burning time (I know it's not enough but it should at least give me significant how it should sound like), I realized how far ER-4S' sound is dropped when use with portable setup. I won't give you impressions for ER-4S with this setup since this isn't HP100 or Aqueous's impression thread. After that, I tried using ER-4B.....hmmm...it's still little brighter but well more refined.....well...I was starting to think what "musical" I used to think for 4S is what I'm supposed to call "coloured". ER-4B gives me better highs and clarity. Piano's stroke is much better for high's impact and motions of sound is cleaner. I don't know how I should put this line but I couldn't listen to ER-4S with this setup anymore. However, I still prefer ER-4S for portable rig.
Note: You may dislike ER-4B if you use some Nordost or Kimber cables that boost highs.
