so the ipod is off for repair now, and i have to say i haven't been to impressed, for a few reasons:

1. they didn't orginally come and pick it up when they said they would, it took another 2 days which meant when they came i wasn;t in, so i had to arrange a pick up myself, adding more time to the process
2. the box for sending it back in already had a letter in tehre saying that "after inspection" my ipod was broken becuase it was my fault.

odd seing as they haven't even seen it yet.

i'll let you all know how it goes.

Sorry to hear that. I can assure you that is atypical of Apple, unless they are much different in the UK than they are in the US.

If you submitted the form for iPod warranty/repair service, the "after inspection" would have meant after reading your description of the damage or problem. Unless you managed to get an Apple employee to come pick up your package, I would say that the shipping service is at fault for the delay in pick-up. Why blame Apple's tech support for that?

I believe that by opening your iPod you knowingly voided the warranty, so if they do notice it and charge you for repairs or replacement, it's no fault on them. Hope things go well for you though.

I sent my iPod in a few months ago for battery issues. I got a free replacement and the process was easy, though not speedy, so I don't have complaints about their warranty service.

it was apple's fault becuase they didn't put the request for it to be picked up through when i originally called.

if my description alone is enough for them to refuse service, that is very poor for a start, but also, why would they also give me the box to send the ipod back in as well, wouldn;t that be pointless?
i wasn't silly enough to tell them i opened it!!!!

i asked them about the letter and they said it was a mistake.

my description of the problem was "the headphone jack has come unsoldered from the circuit board inside. i know this because when i put headphones into the socket, i get no sound out of either side, and the jack move freely within the casing"

well, i got a brand new (read refurbished) ipod today from dhl, plugged it in, tried to update firmware, something broke.

its now totally buggered, heats up far too much, wont turn off, it gets stuck in a reset cycle (apple logo showing up only)

so now this one is going back too.

i cant even get my pc to recognise that damn thing as a drive.

i am so pissed off right now.

How bizzare. I just got mine back from Apple yesterday. They gave me a new one as well. Don't know if it's refurbished or not. Hooked it up and it worked flawlessly. I spent 15 hours completely retagging all of my mp3s. On the Archos units it browses by the name of the file... not by IDtags. So all 2478 tracks I had were all numbered in sequence of what album they came from. When I first got the iPod I noticed they sometimes played out of sequence... hence the retagging operation. Now everything's ok. Hope everything works out for yours Dweebgal. What makes you think it's refurbished? Hope I didn't get your old one then!

i could tell it was refurbished as there were a couple of tiny scratches on the back, like it had been cleaned off.

i spoke to the "specialist" tech support, boy, i feel special

stupid thing was i was using xplay to update to 1.3, next time i'm just gonna use the windows updater to go to 1.2.6 straight away

I think you just answered your question on why the refurb ipod you got back doesn't work.

Well I'm using mine on a iMac so it figures it would be fairly flawless. FOr that matter everyone I talked to was helpful & they sent the new one back really fast...

they think i'm using an imac and os10!!

mwah hahahahahahahahahaha!

but the bloke at the "specialist" centre said it made no difference swapping between pc/mac firmware at all, even on the old ipods!!

so you reckon the best idea than when i get the new (mac formatted) ipod back i should use the offcial apple updater to update it with the windows firmware first?

i had 1.3 running on xplay/old ipod no problems. obscure.

So you're giving false information, telling half stories, and bending truths to Apple representatives over the phone, not updating correctly, and not informing Airborne Express yourself to pick up your package like you're supposed to? Sorry to say it, but I don't think any problems you have or will experience in the future with this are in any way the fault of anyone but yourself.

who are airborne express when thier at home?

here's the deal:

i moan to apple, apple tell dhl to come pick it up, apple neglected to tell dhl first time round : apple's fault

they put a letter in the original despatch box that shouldn't have been there: apple's fault

my first ipod had shoddy soldering so it broke: apple's fault

updating through xplay, as far as i'm aware is updating properl'y, it just loads the mac firmware on, which should work and did work before.

technically i *am* using a mac ipod. if i tell them i'm using on a pc with 3rd party software, do you think they would give support?

also the tech support said the overheating is a safety issue, and is indicative of why the firmware update probably failed anyway, busted HDD apparently. this is just what i was told.

what i did with this ipod worked with my previous one, so there is no reason for it not to work.
and i would also like to point out, i only opened my ipod, *after* the headphone jack broke.i thought maybe i could re-solder it myself. not so, too tricky for me.
i also opened it very carefully, i didn't actually damage the unit in the slightestt.

besides i didn't realise you and apple were so close frosty, jesus, you think i'd insulted your mum or something.

chill out.

who am i harming, seriously?
i asked for advice, not a lecture.
