DBA-02 vs SM3

  1. Evoke
Hi guys. My local online shop is having a good discount of the dba-02 and sm3. I am going to get DBA-02 but was wondering if it's worth the extra 200bucks get the SM3. I am worried about the rolled-off highs of the SM3 that I have heard from some users here.

    Any opinions?

Yeah, that's like asking if we breathe. [IMG]

You probably could have picked two more different IEM's, but I'm not sure what they'd be.
To my ears, the DBA-02 is bright, clear, transparent and slightly on the cool side of neutral. They are borderline analytical.
(Again, to my ears) the   SM3 are none of the above. The highs are rolled-off (unless you do the filter removal mod), the bass is seriously abundant, and the mids are slightly muted. These are warm and bassy IEM's.

It just depends on your tastes. I would not care for the SM3 if it was half the cost of the DBA-02, but there are others who would say the exact opposite... oh wait the DBA's are half the cost. [IMG]  But all kidding  aside, many love the SM3 and find it full-bodied and rich. Some are very sensitive to highs and find the DBA shrill and sibilant, thin and without any body.

    Good luck

I think DBA-02 headphones are very good, much better than the Phonak Audeo, but SM3 is perhaps different wording. For now I have a Fischer but also reflect on SM3. If you need a balanced play, I recommend the DBA-02:)

For the most part I would agree with Shane (I just think the SM3's mids are rich). I am currently A/Bing the DBA-02 and SM3, and I personally like the DBA-02 more. Between my brother and I there are now 6 really nice headphones: AKG K240, DBA-02, CK10, SM3, Sennheiser HD650, and MTPC. I personally love the K240 and DBA-02 (CK10 is great but I like the DBA-02 a tad better). On the other hand, my brother really likes the HD650, SM3, and MTPC. So it really comes down to a matter of taste. Both are really good headphones for their sound signature. DBA-02 is a bright headphone with sparkly highs and tight bass. The SM3 is a rather warm phone with rich mids and bass, and smooth, rolled-off treble. There are various ways to increase the treble (ex. better tips, filter mod, etc.) but the SM3 won't reach the treble level of the DBA-02. And the DBA-02 won't reach the bass levels of the SM3.

So really just ask yourself: Do I like a bright and tight sound sound signature, or do I like a warm, rich sound signature?

If you want something similar to the SM3 at the price of the DBA-02, I would look into the Radius DDM.
