Since i didn't get the answer i was looking for i am reposting this question but rephrasing the question.

Which would yield better results a darth beyer dt770 or a dd990 with upgraded cables? I game and I am a bass head. I am looking for deep bass and great mids and highs.
what is the best ohm version to buy in the dt770 cans?

V3-O 80 ohm Darth with 2M Blackmax will do everything you want.

If you're going to go Darthed - It makes more sense to get your dt770/80 directly from Headphile. The "traditional" Darths make the most gaming sense, and also good musically. To go an extra bit lower you could try getting Larry to build you a pair of X-Deep closed Darths. They're more balanced thru the mids and upper bass. Oh yeah, definitely choose the BlackMax cabling for them, and also go closed, not screened.
While dt990's have copious bass - they will not have the explosive impact desirable in gaming of the 2 Darth models I've suggested.

why not use blackgold cables?

B/c Blackmax is best for Darths in most folks opinion. Blackgold is great too though.

Gl on getting an X-Deep though. They hurt Larry's wrists lol.

I liked the Open b/c the soundstage was larger and the bass was more natural. Closed Darths are just too pounding for me. They do better at low volumes though.

There is more than one reason you are having trouble getting more precise answers is you approach is rather scatter-shotted. On hand there is your desired for a supreme Gaming headphone, and then there is music - and you list almost every genre in you sig., plus there has been no mention a desire for no-amp., or any particular style of amp you are willing to purchase. IOW you have to better-define what you want to do. No headphone is great for all. Every single one will have its' own set of weaknesses. Oh, $ to spend - any budget strictures?

Re your mentioned alternative - I know people with 250 ohm dt990, and I own the 600 ohm version, and some I know have upgraded from 250 to 600 ohm.........I don't know of anyone who has bothered to re-cable them.
I see you have D2000 and it is worthwhile to recable them with something silvery for rock/Pop.......so that would take care of 2 genres for you. The HD600, and the HD280 - I'd say adios to those. But, that's me.

Thanks bushguy,

you are right about that and after i reposted i still didnt get it right. let me try again as this is important to me.

my budget is 600 or less for the cans I will be buying a zaholu 2.5 with upgraded amp and have xin supermicro 4 ordered since may. I might also buy the new reference from xin.
I am going to get the akg701 for my competitve gaming headphones.
I am going to get another set of beyers either the dt770 and get them darth modded or go with the dt990 and upgrade the cables to achive better sound.

i have talked to a few people in private messages recommending the dt990s with a different cable i am down to two choices left dt770 or dt990. heres what ill be using them for non competitive gaming and electronic, techno genre and rock and very little rap. I am wondering what the sound difference would be if i pitted the two together?

please let me know if am not asking something right thank you..

These folks you've "spoken" to who recommend 2005 dt990 - do any of them actually own and use them with the recabling they're advocating?

k701 is a rather unusual choice for competitive gaming - how did you come to that decision? The star has been dt770/80, which you sold (with Ultrasone also highly regarded). I know that some k701were given to some major players -but that doesn't necessarily reflect their desirablity in FPS........it's hard to turn down a significant freebee.

Well I agree that there are a myriad of choices regarding gaming headphones, the AKG K701 is definitely not one I would think about for gaming, let along competitive gaming. They are great headphones, don't get me wrong; but I think even the stock DT770/80 would trounce them for such use as competitive gaming. Not to mention you really need a beefy amp to bring out the details along the sound spectrum, and IIRC they don't allow you to bring amps or similar devices to competitive tournaments?

Also, I'm not able to answer your question regarding a D990/250; I do have one on the way to me, but haven't as of yet received it. I do however, like the newer 2005 DT770/250 vs. the stock as well as a V2 Darth Beyer. Mind you, I've only listened to one iteration of that model, i.e. the V2; would like to hear the opened/screened/deep versions someday. All the others here are Beyer veterans, so to speak, so I'd heed their advice, and from a gaming perspective, I think spaceman games quite a bit.

Hey man yes they have right now and swear by them. I came to the decison for the k701 based on sounstage, also supposedly they are extremely precise beind ideal for player location. I have read a few hundred threads on them and while they may or may not be the best im going to try them. I did like the beyers dt 770 but the recessed mids and highs werent good enough for me. just curious which ultrasone model?

Aug 5, 2007 at 7:16 PM Post #15 of 26
Ultrasone Proline 750 is a little better re positioning than dt770 - but explosions won't go B-O-O-M quite as much as with dt770. BTW - treble is NOT recessed in them, only the mids - and that is rectified by Darth mod.

What I do know is I don't like k701 for FPS. Each to his own.

.........and never rely on anything, but your own ears. All too often untruths get repeated enough to seem like truth.
