I currently own a Beyer DT990 post 05 250 ohms that I drive with a Porta Corda MKIII-USB. I love its sound, except the harsh highs that are really tiring.

I was thinking of buying a Darth Beyer, and was wondering which one is closer to the DT990. I'd like to keep the soundstage of the DT990 and the general signature, except for the highs.

Another solution could be to recable the DT990, or maybe take another version (80 or 600 ohms) or change the amp?

Uh-oh. A Parisian. Give me the countryside

Epernay etc.
You love dt990 and so do I. Your complaint re harshness in treble with some recordings will disappear with the 600 ohm version............but, you should not expect your Porta Corda to handle it. You would run them far better with the Analog vers. of Opera with raised gain.

Darths - I got Larry (Headphile) to build a pair that come very close to them (dt990) by using 32 ohm 2005 dt770 drivers into 2003 cups/headband (I supplied all parts). The balance of bass-mids-treble is about the closest you will achieve but, of course, you now have closed cans. Obviously, they are very portable.

"Classic Darths" are built on 80 ohm dt770 drivers and do not have the same treble balance (less treble). To put it simply re screened Darths - a larger soundstage. X-Deep Darths will give you more balance thru the mids and upper bass - but still have very impactful and deeper bass.
Simply doing a re-cable will not achieve the changes you desire.

Ouch. Even a normal Cantate or Opera is not going to suit? I suppose I can forget the idea of driving them with my D2+Porta...

And what about "normal" Skybeyers?

Tx for the answer anyway

I'm going to look a bit deeper for DT990 600 !

The Opera Analog is 775 Euro (Jan would not charge to raise gain). He'd certainly be able to advise you re Cantate with dt990/600. I just know I have to get around to raising gain (soldering in a pair of resistors) on my Prehead Mk II for some recordings.
The Lukes (IMO) don't measure up to the aforementioned suggestions - but may be close enough for you. I've never seen or heard of any other than the one pair of 250 ohms that was posted around here. It's a smaller cup...........with Darths you should assume larger cup = better sound if you simply interpolate the mention of Darth vs x-deep Darth as above - except now you're heading in the opposite direction.

Terrific post - very accurate IMO. If you find the DT990 to have too much treble, stay away from the "Luke SkyBeyers" which use the 2005 DT770, and stick with a classic Darth.

My favorite of all is the deep-cup closed Darths. Most balanced, with awesome deep bass as BushGuy said, but not as much upper bass as the normal Darth Beyer.

Ok so I'll have to put an ear into a pair of Darth Beyer with deep cups to get an idea

I asked Jan Meier about the DT990 600 Ohms version, and he told me that:

Quote:

Actually, the gain factor of the PORTA CORDA is higher than of
the other amplifiers, as it was designed to be used in
combination with a portable source. It will not have any
problems driving the DT990-600 to insane levels!
