I offered her $270 shipped to my door, and she took it. However, I didn't know the only form of payment was PayPal.

Luckily, I had picked up a used 336i with some decent tube for a few bucks cheaper. Looks new, and could pass for being "new" as well. Good deal on my end, however these amps very rarely come up on sale in the FS section.

How does the darkvoice 336i sound in stock form.

I really don't want to have to start buying different valves for it straight away just to get decent sound quality.

These are the valves it ships with going by the ebay auction site.
(Tube:6N8,6N5(directly replaced to 6080, 6AS7)

I will be using it with a pair of HD600's headphones.

Many thanks.

The stock 6AS7 (rear, large tube) is of decent quality. The only thing I recommend is replacing the front tube (6SN7). You can get some decent RCA's for a few bucks on eBay.

Or, you can PM me, and I have a few RCA 6SN7's I'll part with for cheap..

The Darkvoice 336i is a terrific amp. But I think you have to be prepared to upgrade the tubes. I think the stock tubes are very limiting sonically, whereas $25 spend in getting some nicer tubes makes a HUGE difference.

You can't go wrong with RCA's, both front and back. Smoked glass RCA 6SN7's are solid tubes, and you can pick them up pretty cheap on eBay, if there is any.

Your best bet for tubes is eBay. They usually have all sorts, sometimes cheap, and far cheaper than tube vendors online.

Since my 336i purchase, I now have 12 different tubes.. it's an addiction, I swear. Skylab must have thousands by now..

Good luck..

So, is it generally recommended to just leave the big stock tube in back near the transformer alone? I just did a quick ebay check and there doesn't seem to be much of a shortage of the 6SN7 family of tubes. Electro-harmonix, Sovtek as well as some RCAs are available at the moment. Please make recommendations for both myself and the OP. THANKS!

6AS7 is a replaceable tube, but many agree, swapping out the 6SN7 provides the biggest change in sound.

I think there was around 15 6AS7 and 11 6AS7G the last time I checked. 6080 tubes are also direct replacements for the 6AS7.

Since there's a ton of different tubes out there, that produce different sounds, your wallet will be the only limit. You can get some tubes like the CV181 for $200 a tube, or the Bendix 6080 for $150 a tube.. and these are arguably some of th better tubes out there. 5692 tubes are also great sound, from what I understand, and run about $100 a tube.

Tungsol, RCA, Raytheon, Sylvania etc. are all solid tubes. I would stay with American tubes for both slots. I I have also read to stay away from the Sovtek brand for this amp.

I thought remembered reading that the Sovteks were recommended for the Little Dots. Figured they'd be good on the DarkVoice too. Thanks for the heads up...
