I just got a GE JAN 6080 tube. It was really pretty with a metal base. NOS in original box. The phones were sitting on the desk. When I turned the amp on, I heard a "ping"

and now have one channel. I removed the tube and put in my previous Sovtek 6AS7G. My backup phones work fine with the Sovtek back in place.

Any ideas? Would this be a short in the tube or something?

Dark clouds are gathering on my decision to buy 336i

But then again maybe most tube amps would be to noisy for me(using low impedance headphones)?
Opera was said to be tubey like SS so maybe will buy that one.

I only know of 2 headphones hurt in all of head-fi, and only with a 6080 tube (should be using a 6AS7G), so I don't think that will stop me from using my 336i and enjoying it.

crap happens. There are thousands of people dying in car accidents each year, that doesn't hold me back from driving my car.

I've been using my DV 366i with the K701 for a few months and haven't had any problems, if that reassures you

That's because there are millions more of people who aren't dying in car accidents.

Hopefully, this will turn out to be just a few instances instead of it becoming more common.

I think it's just a unlucky coincident.

No hum whatsoever, just dead silence.

Guys, welcome to the world of NOS tubes. Don't blame the 336i - it has nothing to do with the amp.

A wise man once told me: "don't use your amp as a tube tester - get one". So I did.

Even if you buy a tested, "NOS" tube, you are buying a 40,50 or even 60+ year old delicate electrical device, and having it shipped to you. Amazingly, in the hundreds of vintage tubes I have bought, only a few were bad when I got them. Good things those bad tubes were revealed by my tube tester, and not when plugged into an amp driving my $1000 headphones

I guess I should plug in a cheap pair of phones when I swap tubes.

With that said, I've had no problems putting in various 6080's, 5998's, and 6AS7's into the 336i

Edit: April 17th. My 701's are toast.

I did not mean to be harmfully happy of your accident. I was just happy that 336i could still stay on my next amp list.
I see that you are using Stello DA100 for DAC, so am i. Headphones are just different AKG K340 and Audio-Technica A900. Do you have left/right channel imbalance on the low region of your volume pot? This interest me because i usually listen quiet to moderate volumes.

Sorry about your phones SoundOfMind

quick question though, do you make sure to turn the volume all the way down when turning your amp on/off? Does anyone think doing this would protect the phones against a faulty tube?
