What kind of music does she like?
That would give me a good idea of what to recommend.

If it's for your better half, why did you title the thread for your mother?
You don't have to be young to like this sort of music. I'm 45, and I like it. My better half is a little younger than me and she likes some of it.

We do need to know what she listens to now.

I used the "your mother" as a convenient tag for people who would not normally listen to the Darkest Desires gendre at all. In my case, the person concerned being my non-subscribing better half. Too subtle?

I suspect I am not alone. Hence, it would be useful to identify softer, "nicer" Darkest Desires tracks that might be enjoyed by gentle folk.

Such tracks also show the versatility of many Darkest Desires artists - and demonstrates that style of music mostly played is by choice, not due to lack of musical ability.

For example, I would say that Opeth's Silhouette qualifies.

One of my favorite songs is A Forest by Carpathian Forest. The only problem with using this track from Black Shinning Leather/ Through Chasms and Caves, is that it really doesn't represent the music of Carpathian Forest. It's a great dark, mellow song that is more electonica than metal. I think this proves that these guys have a talent for something other than what they normally play.

Almost any song by Therion. I'm kind of partial to the song To Mega Therion from the album Theli. It's like an Opera, clean vocals and some fat lady singing type vocals.

Although Beyond The North Waves from Immortal's Sons Of Northern Darkness album isn't "nicer", it is a very well written piece. Very powerful, and melodic.

Have you ever listened to Nokturnal Mortum? Black Moon Overture, the first track from Goat Horns is a great piece. It is classical music to me. No singing at all, just an orchestral piece.

I don't know if I was headed in the right direction, or not.

I have been thinking about the same thing. I want to find some "easier" dark metal pieces to show for people, who would be scared off by intense growls and sawing guitars.

Some ideas :

Sentenced - Mourn is a nice instrumental piece, which is very melodic and powerful.

Tenhi - Souto is one of the most emotional piano compositions I have ever heard. The band isn't metal, but it's dark and popular among the metal crowd.

Silentium - Revangelis from Altum is another nice one. Only clean female/male vocals, and a lot of classical elements. Also a good one for testing audio equipment.

Therion indeed has a lot of potential tracks. Almost anything out from Deggial or tracks Call of Dragon, Sirius B or Lemuria from the new 2cd set.

The Gathering has some great tracks, like In Motion. Fabulous female vocals and moody but heavy song.

AGALLOCH

Meditative, American, folksy, relaxing metal, clean and raspy vocals.
Recently got 'The Mantle' & 'Pale Folklore'.
I've only heard Mantle so far.
Superior quality recording!!!

Some CDs my wife (country fan) doesn't seem to mind...

EBM stuff seems to go over easier since it has some dance sensibility.....

Intermix - (Instrumental Frontline Assembly with some Delerium leanings)
VNV Nation - Empires (especially Darkangel and Standing). She actually likes this CD.
Evils Toy - Angels Only
Cyberaktif - Nothing Stays
Midnight Syndicate

Or you could always go the route of easing her in with some commerical stuff like Evanescence and then work up to some of the real goth stuff (Wait until October and call it Halloween Music). Or Some Rammstein - Sehnsucht (she loves this) as a warmup to KMFDM (she don't like this, so I guess that didn't work).

Delerium has the same beats and basslines as Frontline Assembly so you could try using that as a gateway to industrial, though Intermix would probably work better as the lack of vocals won't cause as big a jolt as going from Delerium to Frontline. But if Intermix doesn't work, then I guess you'll have to start with Delerium.

Yes, I consider gothic to be the true "Darkest Desires" music though people go crazy talking about metal, but I find goth to be much more direct on darkness and desires.
