Hi I don't think I have ever posted on this forum but....

My sister for Christmas gave me a Danny Elfman "Volume 2: Music for a Darkened Theater" 2 CD set. It is a compliation of many of his movie and TV works. It gives you a small taste of many of his works.

She bought it for me because she knows I like movie music. When I got it I cringed: "Danny Elfman - oh no! ANY COMPOSER but him. He is that guy who makes that crazy awful music. AND TWO FULL CDs OF IT-ACK!" - I thought.

I am a big fan of Hans Zimmer and John Williams - and anyone who has heard Danny Elfman knows he sounds NOTHING like them (except maybe "Batman Returns")!

However to be nice, I listened to it. The first thing I noticed was, as expected it was different from John and Hans.

The first track was the opening of "Edward Scissorhands". According to Dannys liner notes, it is his favorite personal score. It was very weird, to say the least.

Speaking, of the liner notes, they were VERY helpful. True, they were short, but they helped me see Danny's thought process...which made the music barable and ultimatly enjoyable.

I began to enjoy the music, it was a good break from the stuff I was used to . I expectially liked his stuff from "Black Beauty" and "Batman Returns" and "Nightmare before Christmas".

I listened to both CDs streight through, back to back.

The thing I noticed to be Danny's calling card was "la-la-ing" female (sometimes synthized) vocals. You can almost tell that Danny "la-s" his music to himself.

There was a bonus track on the end of 2nd CD called "this is halloween". It is the original demo track to the NM-B-C song (which the final track BTW was not included) . It had the whole song sythed and with Danny singing all the vocals. It was very crazy and funny. Danny BTW, says his agent made him put that one on.

Anyway, listen to music you think you might not like. It could be a break from the ordinary.

I have to agree, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman make an awesome combination. I really like Elfman's music, it's quirky and amusing, and delightfully dark and morbid too. His scores do tend to sound very similar though - the intro to Spiderman was strongly reminiscent of Batman. Edward Scissorhands is fantastic work though, very touching. And Nightmare Before Christmas - why hasn't somebody made a musical from this one yet?? Sleepy Hollow also has a good score, although more sombre than the others, to suit the tone of the film.

I'll have to look out for that compilation, if only for the bonus track!

i know! i've been asking this same question for years, i think it would make a truly wonderful musical. the songs alone are good enough to drive it.

Nightmare Before Christmas is a great movie (just got it on dvd), but it wouldn't be nearly as good w/o Elfman's music and the singing!
