I'm heading up to Cambridge tomorrow to get either a DAC1 (from dv247) or a Cambridge Audio 840c. Those are pretty much my only two options as I want to take something home that day and I've heard and like both. I mainly listen to jazz, 70s rock and electronic. It'll be paired with a Graham Slee Solo and a Squeezebox feeding it digital via coax. Bearing in mind that the 840c is £100 more, is there any reason to choose it over the DAC1?

Enjoy your new 840c.

I'd get the 840c because assuming that the dacs are on par with each other, a good transport is going to cost much more than the difference in price.

And the Graham Slee Solo probably makes the DAC1's headphone amp irrelevant. 840C FTW - I'd feel pretty badly if the Squeezebox's output wasn't significantly improved by the DAC1. At least with the CD player, you get both a transport and a DAC.

For what it's worth, I haven't heard any of this equipment - I'm just using pretzel logic. Boomana can flame me.

The 840c in my mind is a no brainer to me. I heard the 840c a few months ago against my Lavry.

840c gives you two independent digital inputs, one digital output, and true balanced analog output, single ended output...oh, and it's a CDP as well. On the side, it doesn't sound too shabby

Only negative thing is...it's heavy

840C. Just from the resale factor. It's a hot player right now so reselling in the event you don't like it will be easy. DAC1's have been around the block and are common nowadays. Besides you can brag to your friends that you have the same DAC's as an Esoteric D03.

I'm in the same market right now and I wouldn't think twice about getting the 840c. It has digital input if you want to use it as a DAC for other components as well. Triple duty against single duty? I think a no-brainer, (especially if you are set on buying a dedicated headphone amp the quality of the Slee Solo)!

Biz,
Several hundred hours break-in unless you are getting a demo. Can you use the upsampled output of the 840c to the squeezebox/pc for cd storage?

I believe the Apogee Mini DAC also uses the 1955.

I am drooling over the 840c for the price. Enjoy your new toy.

As you may guess from my other thread, I am a fan of the 840C. Likely the best value product I have ever purchased. I agree that it does need some break-in, with at least 150-200 hours to start strutting its stuff.

You can choose to output upsampled or pass through from the 840c's digital output.

Well in the end I got the DAC1. I went to buy the 840c and my card was declined. Plenty of money on it, a type accepted by the store, my bank didn't know why. Anyway, much disgruntled, I bought the DAC1 online from Thomann. I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much, it's a great DAC that I've heard before. Thanks for the advice.

DAC1 is an excellent choice too, especially with Senn cans. You should not feel any buyer's remorse. Enjoy your new purchase...it will make you happy for very long time.
