DAC in the box SUPER Pro

Do you have many SACD's? You won't be able to use that DAC with them... I'd say wait for more funds and mod the unit. I don't think the DAC will be that much/if any of an upgrade, quite honestly; the CE595 is a good source for the price. You're money would be much better off going towards a Zapfilter or something (upgraded PSU and/or caps, swapping out opamps, etc). YMMV.

And wow! You've been a member since 2003 and have been able to keep your rig costs down to a minimum, it seems. Good for you!

At the moment I only have redbook CD's to play, but I must admit, SACD's have got me intrested enough to give a few titles a listen.
If the "Dac in the box" is only a slight improvement over the built in dac of the Sony I may splurge for one.

Maybe you could take the $60+ you would have spent on the DAC and put it towards some experimentation in Super Audio? I've only got a few SACD's atm, myself, but that's more because not much of the music I listen to is really supported by the medium (and less because I can't hear or don't think there's a difference). However, I could see myself getting into it later on down the road when my rig is in a more finalized state than right now.

I'm also curious as to what level of performance your source/amp/cans would have to be at to really hear a difference. I've yet to A/B the Dark Side of the Moon album I have both in Hybrid SACD/Standard recording, as well a a copy of a standard CD on CD-R, but am eager to do so once my amp's in the haus!

Anyone have this DAC?

I recently bought one from eddi wu(the Super Pro. USB DAC), and have used it over the last week, it produces a clean and dynamic sound.

Not sure how it compares to the DAC built in CE595 though, since I don't own a ce595. I mainly use it as a USB DAC together with my dell laptop, through ASIO. The stock SigmaTel sound card sounds unbearably muffled compared to the sound produced by this little thing. I also tried to use a sony dvd changer as the transport with the dac, and it sounds very good too.

Any thoughts on the build quality?

It is very nicely built, a neat metal box (aluminum?) not bigger than a Marlboro box. Connectors are well organized, and mounted very firmly. It gets really hot (60 degree C?)after running for a while if it is sitting on something insulating. I am putting it on a metal desk, and it remains pretty cool through out.
