DAC difference

That is probably because your headphones really need amping to perform to their full potential. Some cans need amps, some don't.

Yep! They're 250ohm headphones. I assumed a receiver would have a more powerful headphone amp automatically but obviously I learned that lesson the hard way. But that's fine, I just wanted something to power some speakers affordably.

I remember back in the day, Marantz amps and receivers used to have particularly powerful headphone outs, but now it's probably all stock circuitry designed to suit average cans.

I have a Marantz 2285b black face receiver and had never considered using its headphone section, one day just for comparison with my Loxjie D30 dac/amp I plugged my Sennheiser HD 58X into the Marantz and the difference in sound was obvious, the 58X sounded more "alive" out of the Marantz which really surprised me since I wasn´t expecting it.

Not sure what it means, but they mention the 'HDAM-SA2' module for the headphone output for their HD-CD1:

To make the most of personal listening, it has its own volume control and a dedicated HDAM-SA2 amplifier, complete with adjustable gain setting – low, medium and high – to enable it to drive even highly-demanding audiophile headphones.

Yes, that is a full featured headphone amp, not just a standard headphone out. I wonder if other companies do that? With all the screwy headphone impedances and sensitivities it would be a handy feature for some folks. They wouldn't need a separate headphone amp.

The difference between DACs and amps is that DACs convert a digital signal to an analogue one, and an amp takes an analogue signal and increases its volume.

Gosh! Thanks for the anecdotal reference.

You know now he's going to provide a link to the guy who says this without providing a link to the information on the test... How many degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon?
