I have a couple of questions regarding the D777's skip protection. First, is there any difference in sound with the skip protection on or off (i.e. is the audio linear or compressed)? And second, does the skip protection also engage better error correction within the CD player? I swear that my player skips more with the ESP off -- does this happen because of error correction or because the laser tracks differently or the motor spins faster?

Thanks for your time. Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Jasper...

The D777 with ESP on has a slightly grainier sound to it.. the first time I used the ESP function (a fair few years ago) - I thought that my E888 earphones were broken, because they sounded... well, grainer

And, the ESP itself, I don't know the full technicalities ~ but definetly yes, the motor speeds up (twice as fast IIRC) and AFAIK just buffers the next few seconds of music into (presumably compressed) memory

Hopefully people more in the know will add to this...
